About This Page: This is a discussion on NHL Talk within the LetsGoKings.com forums, at Los Angeles Kings Hockey Fan Forum. What do they think this is? NASCAR?
I think with the correct marketing it could really bring more and better TV coverage for the League...
How exactly do you figure that? The only way the NHL would get "more and better TV coverage" is if the ratings improve. How would jamming more advertising into a broadcast increase ratings? Vs, NBC, HDnet or any other broadcaster wouldn't get more revenue out of the ads because they aren't selling the space, the NHL is & therefor it would be the NHL's money, or else this idea wouldn't come up. Which it shouldn't have.
I already can't stand some teams arena using GLOWING ads. Stars and Yotes are two examples. If you look along the ads on the boards, near the faceoff dot on each end of the rink near the goalies, there will be an ad that has a blue colored light to it.
We already have 4 extra ads on center ice, that's on the ice. The foreign teams have it on every part of the damn ice. We don't need extra ads anywhere.
Who really looks at the ads anyway and go... "Ohhh Toyota! I'll go buy a car." or, "McDonalds! That sounds great!"
Isles are using the glow ads as well, they are very distracting when watching on HDTV. You should see some minor league teams for the extra ads. We have Pepsi swirls on the end faceoff dots. (have seen the carls jr. happy star at other rinks) Worst I have seen are the Alaska Aces jerseys, hard not to laugh with players wearing jerseys with ads for Mike's Auto Body Repair and Natural Pantry, and Union Yes! patches on the front of the jerseys.
Nothing better than being bombarded over and over by corporations no matter which way we're looking or even what we're looking AT. If these clubs are hemmorging cash as the article says, doesn't common sense say unload these sinking ships and don't replace or move them? The leagues troubles lie with a very large product that is only soaked up by smaller fan base than the other major sports. Contract and heal.
Seriously, stepping into Staples Center (or any other modern arena) you're smacked over the head with ads every which way you look. Do we (the fans) really want to be even more visually violated by corporate advertising?
I say no. But of course, it's only a matter of time before the owners see the dollar signs involved in this and say yes. I'm suprised that some players want to be used as posterboards (well, more than they already are).

Anyone remember the 80's and before when they didn't even have ads on the boards? It sure has changed since then. Although, I do like having ads on the boards only cause the plain white boards are boring. Now it's just getting over the top though.
