It's entirely possible that Rafalski was asked if he'd like to go and he turned it down.
At any rate, with so many All-Stars no longer going to the game, I think they wanted a big name, and he's an easy pick. He was captain and MVP of the Stanley Cup Champions last season for God's sake (no, I'm not trying to rub it in).
Let's be honest here guys, there have been plenty of times where a player with huge name recognition has been picked over guys with better stats and who were probably more deserving that season. It's the All-Star Game, afterall. It's a popularity contest, and it's one by design.
Who wouldn't want to see Niedermayer play? Be thankful that he's going to be there. Just root for Kopitar and the Ducks

Just curious. I'm just echoing what others are saying in that he shouldn't be in the all-star game over other defencemen (based on the play of the first half of the season). Unless all of the others they asked declined to play, then sure, let him in.

Rafalski was asked (as I kind of figured he was) and he turned it down because he had a trip planned with his family.

Yeah, because clearly the guy is a big pussy. I mean, he only played more than half the season (plus the playoffs) on a fractured foot, and damn near won the Norris Trophy while doing it.

spjon is one of the ok guys...despite his affinity for both the Kings n Wings.
I don't think any player who misses nearly the first 3 months of the season should be eligible for the All-Star Game, nepotism or not. It's ridiculous and a mockery to the other All-Stars. Is Niedermayer capable, of course, but again, just not this season.
This is a joke. Might as well have Selanne come back sometime this week and throw him in the All-Star mix as well. Hey, then there can be a team of Ducks on the ice at one-time versus the Eastern All-Stars!
