About This Page: This is a discussion on NHL Talk within the LetsGoKings.com forums, at Los Angeles Kings Hockey Fan Forum. Can we compromise? Maybe they can play this National Anthem instead.
YouTube - Radiohead The National Anthem Live...
It's jingoistic nonsense to insist that it be played before every sporting event. Playing it so often--and often, so badly--cheapens the meaning of it as well. Makes sense at the Olympics, certain State events, and singular athletic events. With the way things are going in this country, it won't be long before we'll heard "Davis Gaines sings the 'Star-Spangled Banner,' brought to you by Chevron."
Some of you need to get a grip. From your attitude, I'm surprised you're not suggesting that we play the "Horst--Wessell-Lied."
Oh, and the song itself sucks. It's difficult to sing and reeks of Britishness.
All very good points by both sides of the argument.... I couldn't care less either way...... But good points... Some of them almost swayed me.... almost...
why don't you share with us the real reason you would like to have them stop. I don't buy this "looking out for the foreign hockey players" stance you're taking.
And I don't buy the argument that you are nothing more than a douchebag troll.
Gotta agree with OP on this one. They need to honor the two teams and the city/country they represent.
So if you're American, Philly represents you? Anaheim? Douglas, AZ?
The nat'l anthems at sporting events is a ridiculous tradition.
I understand it for the Olympics, since the person who wins gold in the event has their nat'l anthem played and their flag raised.
Besides...just read the "Star Spangled Banner"...it's not the best of tunes, lyrically.
"America the Beautiful" is much better...and minus the question marks.
