Members of Minor League Hockey Team Facing Vandalism Charges
(Buffalo, NY, February 15, 2008) - - Members of a minor league hockey team are facing vandalism charges. News 4's Rob Macko reports, the team is accused of destroying a Jamestown landmark.
This is what it looked like inside the old Vikings Lodge in Jamestown. Shattered glass, busted windows, barstools thrown through doors, beer cans and trash everywhere. Police responded to a report of a broken window yesterday morning, and quickly discovered the damage was much more extensive. Jamestown housing inspector Greg Moran was called to the scene.
greg Moran, Jamestown Housing Inspector, "Found that there were apparently 17 individuals sleeping in the area and at some time during the night they had done a considerable amount of damage to the building."
Police pin the blame on as many as seven members of the Jamestown Vikings minor league hockey team who lived in the building. The vikings are in the blue and white jerseys. They played here at the Jamestown Savings Bank Ice Arena.
On Wednesday, the mid-atlantic hockey league announced it would cancel the rest of the season.
Mike Ferguson, Jamestown Ice Arena General Manager, "We had warned them time and time again that any type of retaliation was futile and useless."
Many players are reportedly owed money, and mistakenly thought team owner Andrew Haines owned the building.
Mike Ferguson, Jamestown Ice Arena General Manager, "I told them that this building had historic significance in this community and that it wasn't owned by Mr. Haines so doing any damage to it but the owner of the building and the community as well as their reputations."
Police say the players also tried to set fires inside the kitchen. Damage at the building is estimated at more than 25-thousand dollars.
Greg Moran, Jamestown Housing Inspector, "A lot of the stuff in this building is irreplaceable, old woodwork, old oak floors, a lot of windows that were busted."
Lt. Todd Isaacson, Jamestown Police Department, "Obviously two wrongs don't make a right this is certainly inexcusable and we'll take whatever measures we can to make sure whomever is responsible for what is held accountable."
No one has been arrested yet, but police say they would face felony charges. Police will review the case with the district attorney's office to determine who should be charged.
Presumedly seeking revenge against the Mid-Atlantic Hockey League for calling it quits in the middle of the season, several players with the Jamestown Vikings trashed the historic Vikings Lodge on the corner of Washington and West Fourth Street early Thursday, leaving most of the building in shambles.
Trash and debris were everywhere, especially on the second and third floors where the stench of beer and rotting food was almost overpowering. Bar stools were smashed through doors, and virtually every piece of glass in the building had been shattered, the broken shards unavoidable underfoot.
They were on a drunken rampage, said Greg Moran, a building inspector with the city Department of Development, who was called to the scene once police learned of the destruction. I was absolutely appalled. ... Some of this stuff is probably irreplaceable.
Jamestown police expect to file felony charges against several minor league hockey players who admit vandalizing a historic building after learning their league had suspended play.
Members of the Mid-Atlantic Hockey League's Jamestown Vikings broke windows and furniture, spilled paint and set a kitchen fire, causing an estimated $25,000 or more in damage to the former fraternal lodge where the team had put them up, police said.
The vandalism happened early Thursday, a day after the fledgling league canceled the remainder of its season to reorganize.
"Whatever they could break, they broke," Detective Lt. Todd Isaacson said Friday.
