About This Page: This is a discussion on NHL Talk within the LetsGoKings.com forums, at Los Angeles Kings Hockey Fan Forum. again, i think that waiving his NTC is the best thing that could happen to both Mats AND the Toronto Maple Leafs...
HockeyBuzz.com - Eklund - Has He Waived It? And
I have heard at least two reports that there are two teams that were interested in Sundin that he would not go to.
Mats wants to win, and I get a strong indication that he wants to stay in Canada doing it.
I have heard that Detroit will make a push, but as in the case with Rob Blake may be hesitant to move guys like Brendan Smith.
I have heard Dallas is making a push and even an attempt to extend Mats.
I have heard that San Jose feels they could use him and in Marleau may hold a key piece, especially were they to take Kubina or Raycroft (who they should go after) along with Mats.
Ottawa is also in the running, believe it or not. The Sens made a huge improvement to the team yesterday and are very much trying to convince Forsberg to come to town.
However, in the end I believe it comes down to Vancouver and Calgary. They both have the pieces needed to get it done, but they also both want more. Antropov going with Sundin would allow the Canucks or Flames to justify the deal since they know they would have Antropov next year when the dust settles.
I think that whole situation stirs up more fodder than anything. Seriously, any team that trades for Sundin has to know they are getting a rental player. I would think it would be difficult for a GM to part with anything spectacular just to get that "coveted" rental player for a playoff drive/playoffs. Draft picks are fine and maybe ditching a 1st rounder just to win a Championship is worth it. I would think so, but if a team is that close to competing deeply into the play-offs, chances are the pick the trading gets in return won't be all that great. People can say whatever they want about draft classes, but I would never hinge my team's future solely on draft picks alone.
It's sort of like the Rob Blake situation.
We have all seen the rentals come and go at the trade deadline. But when was the last time you actually saw a rental player make such a huge difference with their new team that they propelled the team to a Stanley Cup. It just doesn't happen very often. In fact I can't think of any recently...maybe someone else can.
