So that makes him a UFA after that contract is up as that will be 8 years. He's still got one year left on his Entry Level Contract.
he gives up 1 year of UFA status, but that is an incredible deal for the pens, there would have been a crazy GM out there that would have thrown atleast 9-10 million for him. Now if they can sign staal to a cheap contract or trade him for strong defensive help, this will be a very dangerous team.
