About This Page: This is a discussion on NHL Talk within the LetsGoKings.com forums, at Los Angeles Kings Hockey Fan Forum. He had Tkachuk.
He had Kariya.
He had Boyes.
He had the defense. (Brewer, Jackman, Johnson and McKee!!!)
But with Kariya added and entire season, I think it proves what
Jim Fox was commenting on him tonight, and you could almost tell he wanted to say the same thing but held back.
Start fast, die faster-Andy Murray hockey
Andy Murray isn't a bad coach. His style is too demanding on the body for an 82-game season though. His coaching style is best suited for Juniors like Shattuck where he formerly coached, or for tournaments like the World Juniors or World Cup. He demands high intensity, dump, chase, & forecheck hard hockey that forces turnovers and crashing the net, but it often handcuffs more talented offensive players. How many times did we used to scream at players like Palffy, Demitra, Frolov for dumping the puck in? Also, not all players are built for that style of play.
He is great with developing youth and demands all of his players to play 2-way hockey, but it is very physically challenging and by the 3/4 mark of the season the players are just worn out. That is why his coaching style is best suited for another venue that plays fewer games in a season. I think his best fit though, may be as an NHL assistant coach.
I think Murray is more suited for a young team and Crawford is more suited for a veteran team... The 2001 Kings was a Vet team, the blues are mostly a Vet team. I Think we should trade Crawford for Murray still :P but I wouldn't say Murray was an outstanding coach or anything. I just think he would be able to get more out of our team and better utilize our youth than Crawford and that Crawford would better utilize the Blues' Vets.
Hrm, I would think that him being hard on his youth would whip them into working harder. They make it sound like he just doesn't give them a chance at all. I suppose Cammy and Frolov were affected by this but at the same time I am not so sure. We had a pretty good and deep roster at the time. I have to think back and reflect on it more but I personally feel he wasn't as hard on the King's youth as they make it out to be.
