the reason it's onyl for 1 year is that the Wings have contracts expiring for Zetterberg, Franzen, Samuelsson and Hudler next year. If they sign Hossa to a multi-year deal they have a lot of trouble resigning those guys.
this is simply an attempt for Hossa to get a ring.
