The NHL isn't the first professional sports league to use a salary cap. I'm not exactly stabbing blindly in the dark here.

The NBA and MLB allow for (gigantic) over spending and the NFL doesn't have guaranteed contracts.

... and the general ideas still apply.

globesports.com: GMs don't tip their hand

One after another, they addressed the negotiating process, in the context of the upcoming trade deadline, which happens in 13 days time — Tuesday the 26th, right after the GMs get together in Naples, Fla. for their semi-annual meeting.

Tellingly, not one single query — in almost 70 minutes of a non-stop question-and-answer session — dealt with possible rule changes; the only state-of-the-game issue dealt with making neck guards mandatory in the aftermath of the Richard Zednik injury (answer: it is unlikely to happen).

Instead, the majority of questions dealt with the evolution of the NHL trading game — and how, in a salary-cap world, with the need to plug young, cheap players into a team on an ongoing basis, there is a greater need than ever for teams to weigh short-term goals against long-term consequences.

Speaking of the Rags, there can't be a weirder line than Dubinsky centering Avery and Jagr.
