About This Page: This is a discussion on NHL Talk within the LetsGoKings.com forums, at Los Angeles Kings Hockey Fan Forum. Lets take a look at the game as it is today. Then lets envision one with two less occupants.

Lets take a look at the game as it is today. Then lets envision one with two less occupants.
Todays game is a mish mash of cycling, board work, dump and chase, dump it down the ice/off the glass.Hit 'em here hit'em there, fight, fight, injuries, injuries, injuriesMix that in with the continuous parade to the penalty box and the lack of power for the most part of effective power plays and you have what the NHL has turned into...a bore,a snore, low scores and shoot outs
With the advent of 4 on 4 hockey I thought in good time the NHL would evolve into this form. It hasn't yet and it may not. Lets look at the pros and cons of hockey 4 on 4.
Pros: Well for one thing there is a tremendous amount of room for skilled players. Two; there will be more flow/less congestion to the game. Three; power plays will be more effective since there will two less bodies to have to shoot /pass through and thus more shots for the goaltender to handle. Four; there will be more passing, especially the stretch(long bomb) style. Five; There will be less board-cycling(bore) work, and with that far fewer injuries because that is where it is happening... Six;there will tons of skating and stickhandling which is a lost art. Seven; There will be more one on one blow by the defender rushes ala Bobby Orr,Yvon Cournyor, Valeri Kharmaov,Pavel Bure,Paul Coffey and more slap shots ala Bobby,Dennis Hull. Eight;Goaltenders will have to handle more shots and some teams will have to carry three because of effects of shell shock(that is a good thing). Nine; 4 on 4 hockey will bring back the fans and excitement we haven't seen in a long long time. Ten; The goon will finally be phased out of commission because he couldn't adjust. Eleven; Scores will be of the 4-3,5-4,6-5,7-6 variety, which is what the fans want and need (what and need, what and need).
Twelve; Teams will not be coached to take the "good penalty" because they will scored on more often and that may kill a team. Thirteen;...Fourteen...
Cons: there isn't any...oh ya the odd blow out. So there you have it my opinion.
PS THE NHL COULD FIX THIS UP BY HAVING ALL GOALTENDERS WEAR EQUIPMENT THAT IS 10% BIGGER THAN THEMSELVES INSTEAD THE 120% THEY ARE CURRENTLY SIZING. AND DON'T BELIEVE THE HORSECRAP THAT BIGGER IS NEEDED FOR PROTECTION. GEZ THOSE SKINNY BUT TALLER LEGS PADS ON THE TENDERS DON'T SEEM TO BE GREAT PROTECTION BUT SOMEHOW THEY ARE...

Why not just remove goalies, then you will get all the goals your heart desires. What is the obsession with goals????? Some of the best hockey matches I have seen have been low scoring tight matches.

All these players excelled in the 5 on 5 play. Different era's of play but still 5 on 5.
Hockey is not a game that needs to appeal to the low attention span of Bettman and his cronies who think people dont like low scoring games.
Almost every monumental game ends being a 1 goal difference game.
If you want to see 4 on 4 hockey go watch roller hockey.
Now speaking of equipment:
1) With the technology we have goalie equipment can be shrunk while still maintaining the protection that is needed.
P.s. The instigator penalty is one rule that should be done with. This rule protects the misfits who do not follow the code of conduct. Let the players police themselves again.

Alright novel approach, lets make the rinks biger, like the european league rinks. And while were at it lets make the nets bigger!
The larger playing surface actually wouldn't have been a bad idea. It isn't THAT much more room, but it does open it up a little more, especially for the skilled players.
Of course, that means one less row of seats in the new buildings, but could have been accomodated for if they had decided on this a few years ago, before all the new arenas were built. Too late!
I do agree with you about the larger nets, though. No need for that.
