About This Page: This is a discussion on NHL Talk within the LetsGoKings.com forums, at Los Angeles Kings Hockey Fan Forum. HockeyBuzz.com - Howard Berger - SUNDIN WILL NOT WAIVE
OTTAWA (Feb. 24) -- It's official. Mats Sundin has told the Maple Leafs he will not waive his no-trade clause, as
After weeks of trade speculation, Maple Leafs captain Mats Sundin has made his decision and will not waive his no trade clause.
Sundin and his agent JP Barry met in Ottawa on Sunday in an effort to provide Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Cliff Fletcher with an official answer on whether or not the Leaf captain will consent to a trade.
"I have carefully considered the team's request that I waive my no-trade clause," Sundin told TSN. "I have always believed I would finish my career as a Toronto Maple Leaf so the actual request was still a very difficult one for me to contemplate."
"I have spoken to and listened to my family and those closest to me about this issue. In the end, there is no right decision in a situation like this one."
"I cannot leave my teammates and join another NHL Club at this time. I have never believed in the concept of a rental player. It is my belief that winning the Stanley Cup is the greatest thing you can achieve in hockey but for me, in order to appreciate it you have to have been part of the entire journey and that means October through June. I hope everyone will understand and respect my decision."

Good for Sundin, it just shows how stupid teams/Gms.'s are when they sign a player to a NTC and think the player is going to waive it just to make the team happy. Now teams that thought they were in play for Sundin can let the trading begin.

the key around here for those who feel this way or something like it, is whether or not they will feel the same way about Rob Blake.

That's true. Some will say around here that Blake is not a team player and captain if he waives his NTC for the better of the Kings. And some will say he's selfish if he decides to not waive his NTC and stays.
So who else thinks the duckies will make a play for Hossa now???
Oh and after watching the Wings last night, they will move on Stuart very soon IMHO. They need veteran blueline help and Blakey won't be it. Blake will do like Sundin I think.
Good for Mats. It was obvious he was very hurt by all the speculation. That NTC for Sundin was JFJ's last shot at Leaf fan and the Leaf Board. How's that tasting Leaf nation??!!
The difference between Blake and Sundin is with Sundin, he's been with the Leafs 10+ years. He never left for big money on another team like Blake did with Colorado. So Blake doesn't have the credibility or believability factor that Sundin is. I think Sundin is a stand-up guy who means what he says because that's what he's proved himself to be. I think Blake is a selfish bastard because that is what he's proved to be.

wrong
facts...
both players have played with their current organizations for at least 10 years.
both players have been traded exactly ONCE in their careers.
both players are considered stand up guys with those who matter most, their peers.
the only people that Rob Blake doesn't have any credibility with are a smattering of internet Kings fans and a handful of others who may not bloviate on the internet.
neither player is more selfish than the other and both have made enormous amounts of money... and Rob Blake will be no more selfish or unselfish as Sundin is should HE decide against waiving his no-trade clause.

Sundin was TRADED Rob Blake LEFT because he wanted more money. There is your difference. End of day... when Sundin says he's staying because he believes in bringing up the kids in his team, I believe him. When Blake says it, well, its like listening to a politician.
ETA: When I said Sundin has been with his team for 10+ years and Blake hadn't, I meant Sundin has been with his team for 10+ years without interruption. Blake has not been with the Kings for the past 10 years. Yes, he spent a large chunk of time before going to Colorado, but you have to admit that the way him leaving played out left a bad taste in everyone's mouth (except his) and if fans want to be skeptical of his motives, they have a right to be. I'm not skeptical when it comes to Sundin, but Blake damn straight I am.
