Ducks get Weight, Birner, and a 7th in '08.

Kind of makes sense. McDonald was struggling with Selanne, and I assume that Weight is a UFA at the end of the season. It puts the Ducks in a position to contend again this season, but leaves them with a hole to fill next off season.
St. Louis did Burke a big favor. They should have bent him over a little bit more and gotten another prospect or a high draft pick.

St. Louis just acquired a speedy 80 point center, in his prime, signed for the next 2 years, to play with little Paulie....for a 36 year old player who hasn't broken 70 points since the 2000-01 season and is in complete decline.
Sorry, the Ducks gave up more than the Blues, but time will tell.
Purely to clear cap space. Ducks keep their monster D intact, and lose one of their most expendable players and expensive pieces. McDonald has a 3.333 million dollar salary.
Re-sign Corey Perry and Burke is set.
This trade will not benefit either team this season.

Actually, not really, since Weight is UFA at the end of the season. Anaheim now has more money for Nieds next year and/or Perry. Burke's not done either. Short-term, this benefits the Blues big time, but for the long term, this is a decent move by Anaheim.
Wouldn't surprise me to see Weight get paired with O'Donnell in another trade here shortly.

Get back to me when he scores 80 points without Selanne on his wing.
The Ducks did give up more than the Blues, but considering the spot that Burke was in I think JD could have squeezed a little more out of this deal.

Weight's cap hit is 3.5 million, McDonald's is 3.33. Ducks add (prorated difference or 167K) something less than 100K to their cap for this year. But this clears up 3.33 million they had committed to next year's cap which was their dilemma to begin with.
Niedermayer seems intent to retire for real after this season, so Burke probably felt it necessary to keep Schneider around. McDonald's lack of production probably sealed his fate since it's unlikely Selanne would be around through 2010--although now the rumor is that Teemu might come back as well.
Shrewd move by St. Louis, but the Ducks did what they needed to do.
There was another mention of O'Donnell and Marchant moving in a deal in the other thread. Are they going to be the next to go? I hate Andy McDonald. I'm glad I don't have to see him but once more this year.
