About This Page: This is a discussion on NHL Talk within the LetsGoKings.com forums, at Los Angeles Kings Hockey Fan Forum. This is interesting article. Sorry if this was posted already. Here is link Continental Hockey League to Compete with NHL
Gazprom, a company with a market value of $304 billion,
Gazprom, a company with a market value of $304 billion, has taken the first official steps toward creating a rival to the National Hockey League:
"Alexander Medvedev, Gazprom's deputy chief executive officer, and Russian Hockey Federation President Vladislav Tretiak signed an accord in Moscow to create the Continental Hockey League by April 15, the federation said on its Web site today.
Medvedev is a member of the organizational committee of the Open Hockey League, which is working with the Russian Hockey Federation to form the new league.
"This is the evolution of the Russian Super League,'' Russian Hockey Federation spokesman Vladimir Gerasimov said in a telephone interview after the signing. ``We need to take another step and secure investment from state corporations.''
While the idea of creating this league is not news, it previously faced some obstacles, with the Russian Hockey League against the idea just a short while ago.
"Meanwhile, the head of the Russian Hockey Federation, Vladislav Tretyak, is against the idea.
"There are a number of problems at the moment. The clubs are worried because they don't know whether there'll be 16, 18 or 20 clubs in the new league. I get the feeling, the Open Russian Hockey League doesn't know what they want," he said."
It was also reported that in total, six state-run companies including billionaire Oleg Deripaska's Ingosstrakh insurer will each invest $6 M in the league that will try and stop the hemorrhaging of Russian talent to America.
"The four other companies are oil-pipeline monopoly OAO Transneft, the VTB Group and Vnesheconombank banks and the insurance company Rosgosstrakh, Sovietsky Sport said.
The league will have 20 Russian clubs and an undetermined number of foreign ones, Gerasimov said.
"We can't rush,'' he said. "We need to make sure it won't interfere with the national team and the youth league.''
The NHL's all-time winningest coach, Scott Bowman, and former NHLPA's top figure Bob Goodenow are reportedly involved in the creation of this competitor to the NHL.
Russia’s fledgling Continental Hockey League, which is being touted as a competitor to the NHL, will launch in September with 24 teams, according to league president Alexander Medvedev. It will, however, look like a retooled version of the Russian Super League as 20 of those teams will be within the CHL. As reported by the Globe and Mail:
In an interview yesterday from Montreal, where he was elected to the International Ice Hockey Federation council, Medvedev said the league will adopt international rules and intends to hold a draft that could include NHL players.
"We are planning to draft players from around the world, including the NHL," he said.
The 24 teams will play for the Gagarin Cup, named for cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, the first human in space. The top two teams will then compete in a Europe-wide championship.
Already, the CHL appears to siphoning off NHL talent. As reported by Newsday, former Islanders enforcer Chris Simon has signed on with the CHL.
They can take Chris Simon. He is and will alway be a hack. Interesting article, problem is is if they will get the public backing and investment for the long haul. Could see an International competition between the Stanley Cup winner and the whatever Space cup winner would be of the CFL but not for a while.

I hope you just didn't compare the NFL to the NHL... one is teflon the other is paper towel.
Haha, well, I didn't exactly do that. Just saying that when you try and create a new league and have it compete with an already existing and well known league, you'll ultimately fail. If you don't worry about the competition between leagues and just let each league do their thing, then you have a slightly better chance at longevity otherwise the WWE will buy WCW and everything will be as one ............. for example of course.
The continental league really is not in direct competition with the NHL at least not in viewer perspective. They have their own audiences over their that do not get much NHL coverage. The only thing that the leagues will compete for is the available talent. Even that most likely will not hurt veiwership (I like making up words) because North America won't have coverage of Continental League Games and Europe will continue to not have a whole lot of coverage for NHL game. It's almost positive that the Continental Hockey league will have to overpay for 2nd tier talent in the beginning just to entice legitimate talent from the NHL.

Sure, whatever. And the CFL, USFL, and XFL will go head to head with the NFL and give em a run for their money and blah, blah, blah.
That's actually a very false comparison.
The new league should be handled with a bit of a red flag. If it wasn't such a big deal, Cherepanov wouldn't have dropped so far and Filatov this year wouldn't have to constantly prove he wants to play here.
The next generation of eastern European players will be lost if it begins operation.
What the CHL has that all of those other competitors have is that they can pay much much more to the young stars. All those football leagues couldn't pay 1/10 of the salary of the NFL. This is much different. CHL could easily payout rookie Russian players much more than the NHL will choose to.
On top of that, they have nationalist pride on their side as well.
Why come over to North America to play in front of a small fanbase in a niche sport when you can stay at home, be regarded as a hero, and be paid much better to do so?
Suddenly jumping to the NHL would become the illogical choice for these players.
I would keep an eye of Jaromir Jagr and see if he goes to Omsk. That league knows that he will be the legitimizing force that the league needs, since he is a top tier NHL player, even at his age. They are so serious about it that rumors are that Omsk will also let Jagr choose his linemates - which is an interesting proposal considering Martin Straka too an unrestricted free agent.
All in all, it's pretty serious.
Three of the top scoring players this season were Russian.
If you're going to play the "run out of money card", I wouldn't bet on it.
You should see what this guy pays out for Chelsea football club.

Good post.
Now that Russia is overflowing with oil money the owners in this league will be able to pay top stars big money (and it's tax free).
This new league could have an impact on where all European players are taken in the draft. I think that ultimately it could result in a contraction of the number of teams in the NHL, since the current expansion was due in large part to the influx of talent from Europe.
The NHL could easily return to the 1970's when its players were almost all North American. If that happens, I think 18-24 teams is all the talent will support.

I somewhat disagree with this assessment.
The United States has made leaps and bounds in producing NHL level talent very recently.
With the eastern bloc countries shut off, I think they'll be missing out on one or two real top-end talented dynamic forwards a year. However the United States will still keep the influx of talent level. Sweden has really been churning out good very well rounded young players recently too. Keep an eye on which side of the curtain they choose to fall towards.

Goodenow I can see, but Bowman?
Say it isn't so!
