About This Page: This is a discussion on NHL Talk within the LetsGoKings.com forums, at Los Angeles Kings Hockey Fan Forum. Interesting move by Vancouver owners. They were going nowhere. Florida Panthers west wasn't going to get it done.
Burke heading back to GM the Canucks? His wife's still got her

It's interesting how they talk about GM job and how many years they should've gave him. This brings to the" fire DL" topic where accodring to some people he should'be been fired this season.

Nah, "been there, done that" for Vancouver as far as Burke goes. If he does leave, which I highly doubt it would be to Toronto I'm guessing. More money and the chance to be the "savior".
I wonder if this will affect their baiting Brunnstrom.
Maybe, but there's still the strong Swedish contingent right? Sedins, Ohlund, Edler. I'm guessing that was part of the reason Brunnstrom was looking to sign there.
Should be interesting though, it might delay the signing and let other teams back into the mix.
Nonis may have been there for 4 years but if you look a little closer, a lot of what he was forced to deal with was put on him by what Burke left him, and some of it he was able to offload to get Luongo.
One would have thought those factors would have allowed Nonis another year to make the bold moves he needed to make to transform the Canucks from a goaltending-dependent team with a pop-gun offence, but that is not to be.
Two red boxes this offseason (Naslund/Morrison) and a big three next (Both Sedins and Ohlund) could force a pseudo rebuild, and that's not going to make Roberto very happy unless they are contending right away.

The situation in Vancouver was a little bit different with the team having gone through an ownership change since Nonis took the job. Any time there's an ownership change with a sports team, the GM and coach shouldn't be too comfortable in their position since most of the time new owners want to bring in their own staff. Nonis had a year left on his contract and I'd imagine ownership wanted to hear what Nonis' plan was for making the Canucks better over the summer. If they didn't agree with the plan and were unsure whether or not they were going to extend him, I'd imagine they just decided to fire him now rather than have him go and make moves this summer and then have to hire a new GM who is going to want to bring in his own players anyway. Saves them a year of roster turnover, especially if Nonis wasn't going to feel secure in his position. We all saw the kind of moves Dave Taylor made when he was desperate to save his job.
Lombardi spelled out his plan for turning the organization around when the Kings interviewed him. If Lombardi told Kings management it might be 3 or 4 years till they were back in the playoffs and they were ok with it when they hired him, it would be wrong to fire him before giving him the chance to finish the turn around unless the guy is completely incompitent.
IMO, the Canucks have needed a rebuild for the last 4-5 years. Ever since they choked against the Wild in the playoffs/the Bertuzzi incident. The Luongo trade did nothing to help them in the long run and didn't even do much in the short term. Sure they got a great goalie, but they also got rid of the very little depth that they had to begin with. Bertuzzi, Allen, Jovo, Auld, cough...Cloutier...cough, all left the team and the only ones to come back were Luongo and Krajcek (sp?). Add to that, a deteriorating Naslund (should have been traded a long time ago) which in turn equals a deteriorating Morrison (should have been traded when Flock of Seagulls were still popular), the fact that they never had secondary scoring, Ohlund and Salo's injury issues, and it's easy to see the mess that organization was in. Not to mention an almost bare cupboard as far as top prospects go. The Sedin's were the only bright spot and they aren't first liners.
Nonis had his chance to fix the mistakes Burke left him, or at least start to fix them, and relied too heavily on the Luongo deal to keep his job safe.
Edit: Thanks Bandit. I don't know why I typed Flocking Seagulls.
