listen, if there is a team that has more goaltending problems than the kings its the lightning. despite losing richards, this team just got better. jokinen gives them some secondary scoring not equivalent to richards, but enough to take the sting out of the deal. the only thing i dont like about this trade is that halpern. its clear that the lightning think they have a shot at the playoffs (which they do with the southeast being so tight), but i dont see how halpern gets them there. they should have taken a pick.
obviously dallas came away big here. id say they got the better of the deal, but tampa didnt do too bad either.
they have shed quite a bit of salary over the last two days and have secured their best defenseman in the process... i think THIS deal is highly contingent on Smith's performance.
i'm sure they wanted Fistric much more than Joknien... who wouldn't?
i would imagine their eyes are more focused on Riku Helenius in net for the future.
It's not that it's a bad trade for Tampa overall. It was absolutely necessary to shed salary to get this ship floating again and Richard was the odd man out with Vinny the face of the franchise, St. Louis's contract getting more affordable as the years go by and Boyle the #1 defender for the Bolts. At least the distribution of the cap impact is now more "balanced".
And additionally the upgraded in goal.
Nevertheless i think that they should have gotten at least say a 2nd or 3rd round pick in addition to what is coming back.
The other way round i have to applaud the Stars because it's a very nice trade for them although the mortgaged the future in goal quite a bit. Or maybe not even that if Smith does'nt pan out.
So it helps both teams but obviously Richards cap hit and NTC were a bigger factor than anticipated.

Well this isn't good news for the Kings. So much for Dallas tanking...
no kidding. however, if there's any chance richards will make dallas better enough so that they are a bigger force against anaheim (should the two meet in the playoffs), i'd take a lower pick if it meant anaheim gets eliminated. if they did match up in the playoffs, dallas bombs and anaheim moves on though, i'll be pissed.

lie lie better next time, stay on my side tonight whoa oh... j.e.w.--disintegration.
What would be the Kings equivalent of Smith, Jokinen, & Halpern?
What were the chances of Richards waiving his NTC to come to another last place team?

(Note: Dodgers, Braves and Cardinals fans everywhere are nodding and saying, "Yup ... been there, done that.")
Not taking that into consideration, what would be the equivalent?
Well we don't really have a Smith. He's a promising young goalie who is somewhat proven. More proven then any of our young promising goalies. The closest thing we have is Bernier. I think Smith has more upside than Labarbera and has proven more.
With Jokinen, the equivalent is probably a guy like O'Sullivan. O'Sullivan has more upside though.
Halpern is a third line checker, I guess you could say Armstrong, but Hapern is MUCH better defensivly. Basically there is no exact equivalent.

Which is why the Kings are in 30th place and the Stars are leading the division.
