__________________ Go! Go! Black and gold! Old-time hockey, bar the door, clear the track it's all-out war. Light the lamp, throw a hit, black and gold never quits. The barn is full, our team's in town, so put 'em up boys, knock 'em out. Drop the puck, it's time to go.

Without No. 4 Boston were terrible. He made that whole team click. He carried the play and the team on his back. Without Bobby, Phil scores maybe 40 goals tops while Hodge and Cashman score 25. Bucyk well he'd probably score 50 but the rest were just hacks. Orr logged 40-45 minutes per game every game. And he did that for 9 years. He played a position that was by far the toughest to be a super-star at. Orr didn't float around centre ice looking for passes. He initiated everything. If Orr had been around with healthy knees and played on the Canadiens or Oilers or Islanders he would of scored 100 goals and had 200 assists and people would be talking about the 300 point mark... Orr carried his team and he did so for almost a decade, even on gimpy knees. Gretzky or Messier never had to carry their teams there was top flight help throughout the line-up. Orr made average players good and good players stars. Orr was truly a Super-Star. No player comes close to Orr. Sid the Kid reminds me of Orr in many ways, unselfish, humble and awesomely talented. Of course the Kid (87)may also have to carry the Pens like his predecessor Orr no. 4

The Aki Berg tribute video! Yay!
j/k... Orr was unbelievable.

There was a video clip on YouTube showing Orr's knees and it was awful. They look like roadmaps with all the lines of scars from surgeries. It's just a shame his career was cut so short because those knees just finally gave out on him. At his peak, he was able to move through defence as if they were standing still. Espo near the net most times, getting all those garbage goals, the Bruins were a real exciting team to watch in those days.

SPJ, I totally agree with you. Gretzky was good, but there were better before him.
I'm here! You all said it very nicely. He was THE BEST!!! He was humble, polite, shy. AND CUTE!!! And he was so much fun to watch! Gretzky couldn't carry Orr's skates.
I had the chance to meet him in the tunnel at the Forum. In the old days we had alot of access to the players. They were alot friendlier then.
Earlier I said that Gretzky and Messier didn't have to carry their teams. That was a mistake. Gretzky tried in vain to carry the LA Kings. In all fairness to Wayne by the time he had reached LA is was just an average super star. He didn't dominate because he couldn't by himself. In Edmonchuk he had JKurri and ETikkanen. Besides that he had MMessier and GAnderson for teammates not to mention the rest of the Oilers star studded line up...In LA Gretzky had TSandstrom,TGranato and an aging DTaylor to go with then youngsters RBlake,AZhitnik and DSydor and not much else...Too bad the Kings didn't utilize the drafting of Europeans like the Red Wings had they might've won a Stanley Cup with the likes of a SFedorov and NLidstrom in the lineup. Then again the Kings were not apt to drafting Europeans ...like it was some kind of disease... I'm hoping that DLombardi has looked into the LA's draft history for some lessons for surely there is something to be wrought from.
I wish more people would remember how good Bobby Orr was along with others like Terrible Ted and the TRUE GREAT ONE-MR HOCKEY-GORDIE HOWE.
Gretzky cannot even come close to being as good as Orr or Howe. Gretzky would be lucky to be able to hold Orr's jock
You are absolutely correct. Bobby Orr, before the second knee injury, was the greatest hockey player ever. I grew up in Boston and watched in total awe.

I loved watching the Bruins growing up. Bobby Orr, Gerry Cheavers, Phil Esposito, John Bucyk, etc.
I mentioned to my wife several months ago that Gretzky was great, but that Bobby Orr was the best ever and look what she got me for Christmas.
She gave it to me early so I could put it up in my office before the holiday.
The team in that era was SO damn good from top to bottom... add Eddie Johnston, Green, McKenzie, Sanderson, Westfall, Cashman, Hodge, Stanfield, the Smiths, Awrey, Bailey, Marcotte. This was a GREAT team. Whoever said Orr was playing with a bunch of hacks obviously never saw these guys play. This was one of the all-time best teams in the history of the league.
Don't ever say the Bruins had great talent they did not. All those players you mentioned were just average and no stars. Com'on Sanderson was great...McKenzie too,Awrey,Dallas Smith,Teddy Green,Gerry Cheevers,Ed Johnston. I saw them all play time and again. They scored a tonne of goals because of Bobby Orr. When they came up against the Montreal Canadiens they usually lost but against lesser foes(Toronto M-Leafs,Oakland Seals,LA Kings) they padded their stats...I bet I saw a lot more games featuring the Bruins then probably any of you...

I agree with you - they didn't gel until Bobby Orr got there. And Cheevers was probably one of the worst goaltenders in the league at the time. They just outscored the opposition and their defense was great.
There's a story I heard a long time ago about the Bruins "initiation" of new players. It seems they would dry shave a new players entire body - until Orr showed up. The old guys had so much respect for him that there was NO initiation.

No stars??? I have to disagree. Teddy Green was a perennial all-star. Freddy Stanfield and Johnny "Pie" anchored a great second line. Bucyk was the league's leading career scoring left wing, the man Luc passed. Westfall was the best defensive forward in the league for years. Sanderson was considered the best penalty killer in the league.
I don't know where you grew up, but I started going to games at Boston Garden in 1956. I do have a little bit of a knowledge database from which to draw. Of course, Orr made them better. But they were a TEAM and for 3 or 4 years a great team at that.
