That would be BRILLIANT!!!
If only Brodeur had channeled the spirit of Ron Hextall for a few moments, the league would still be scraping bits of Avery off the ice right now. Screw open mic conversations, I would have loved to see Brodeur kick the crap out of Avery right there. The brawl that ensued would have made for excellent television.
The league needed to issue a rule because it was stupid and you can't let players swing their sticks around at eye level like that. Avery was so focused on trying to block Brodeur he could have whacked Brodeur in the head or a defenseman in the face if one had skated over into the general area. Not to mention Avery himself could have been injured by a shot he couldn't see because he wasn't looking at the play.
From Bob McKenzie's blog earlier today:
Quote:
Whatever they are going to do, they need to do it quickly because what Avery did is so far across the line in terms of gamesmanship that it cannot be tolerated. We don't need to see Steve Ott doing the same thing in J.S. Giguere's grill in Game 3 in Dallas.
As for Rupp/Mara that was awesome and I have always wished that audio would be left open on all sports. Not that I'm jonesing to hear cuss words but because I want to know as much as possible about what happens and what is said out there.
Kind of like those NFL clips on HBO back in the day. For the life of me I don't know why the hell they were censored.
Funny, much has been made on the Devils boards about how Rupp was recently born again and he drew a lot of flack early in the season for his "turn the other cheek" behavior...I say keep up this new 'tude till the playoffs are done, and in the offseason say 3 Hail Marys, a couple'a Lord's Prayers and DOMINUS OMUS you're off the hook kid!

I suppose one could leave one's hands and stick at one's side and perhaps jump in place while moving one's torso and head regions hither and thither in an attempt to block the the opposing team's goalie from keeping his eyes on the puck's whereabouts.
Why would you even need to do this on a 5 on 3? Maybe if he'd paid a little more attention to the power play, they wouldn't have lost the game?
I bet even his teammates are upset with him. You Avery lovers can defend him all you want, it was just plain stupid. The guys not playing with a full deck.

Didn't he score shortly after that?
I'm not defending him anymore than anyone is in a fit of rage over this simply because it's Avery. He's not the disgrace to the game some of you want him to be.

Uh, yes he is. There's a few people who like his crazy act, but the majority of the league and fans think he's just plain nuts.
My opinion of him is the same as the Ducks - they're both really a good hockey player/team - why do you feel the need to brutalize the other team? You can win hockey games by simply playing a hard (legal) hitting game, why bother with the intent to injure philosophy?
