I never said it was his fault. You have to acknowledge that what a player gets in a new contract is often determined by contracts signed previously by comparable players.

Ahlers, do yourself a favor and STFU. You're just making yourself look like more and more of a moron.

Nutcase or not, I would love to have a goalie that could stickhandle like Turco. A whole lot of our defensive deficiencies would have been much less apparent with a goalie who strolled out and cleared pucks regularly when teams tried to dump it in.

Of course there was a possibility but there was no idea as to when they would return and there was no idea as to what would happen in the meantime with the team since they would be starting the season without their two leading goal scorers and their best defenseman. Would they return in time to save the team? Would they return at all? The underlying criticism that you guys are maintaining in order to keep asking these questions implies that Burke knew what was going to happen. He simply didn't and I do not blame him for doing what he felt necessary to keep this team competing at a high level. Criticise all you want but the team was in the playoff picture despite being out of earlier due to the poor start. If Schneider and Bertuzzi aren't signed in order to plug in the holes left by the departure of THREE PLAYERS then this team might be struggling to get in as the #8 seed.
Lombardi only does it for twice the contract length and for players that give him next to nothing in return. Handzus' highlight of the season was when he ate Pronger's uppercuts. As for Schneider, perhaps he would not have gotten so much had it not been for a certain team paying a certain former captain $6mil a season. Check out their stats for the past season and tell me who got a better deal.
OK, maybe Burke's thought was that even if the possibility exists of Selanne and Niedermayer returning, they can't rely on it happening. And so he'd have to fill those voids. But why those guys to those contracts? Like I said, maybe Schneider's was market value but I'd argue they could've found someone slightly cheaper. But there's no argument you could make for Bertuzzi, either the signing itself or the contract terms. And as bad as Handzus played this year, I'd take him and his contract any day over Bertuzzi. Dean Lombardi knew of Handzus' character and leadership from Philly and wanted him to help build the Kings into a winner. We'll soon see if that faith in him is justified. On the other hand, the word character and Bertuzzi don't belong in the same sentence. Believing otherwise is homerism of the highest degree.
