Chock full o' fascinating comments. I'll highlight a few that I think might spark discussion.
On Johnson: "I think Johnson, in some cases, exceeded my expectations for a young defenseman."
On Brown: "I think he's a guy who's going to emerge, not only as a good player but as a leader."
For those STILL confused about what Lombardi is doing: "When you're in this stage, it's about building a reserve list."
Best player available? On the organizational need for defensemen: "The one thing that shows up (as a negative) is the darn backend. That's a hard position to develop. That's why you take the swing at Hickey."
Your spreadsheetin' heart: "We started with about 15 boxes open, then last year we were down to 12. Maybe now it's down to six or seven..."
How weak are the AHL defensemen? Blueline blues: "When I go to Manchester, we have a couple guys who maybe get to that 5-6 (fifth or sixth defenseman) level, but I don't want to limit those kids. Unlike Purcell and Boyle at forward, we don't have anybody knocking on the door there."
Thoughts?

From this statement, it doesn't sound like Hickey was the TOP player on Lombardi's board or at the very least was even with another player.
I'm sure he was up there, probably top 3, but that quote "That's why you take the swing at Hickey". Sounds like he didn't like the organizational depth at D and took Hickey over a guy who he was either close to in terms of rankings or behind.

I don't know. To me "taking a swing" means that they thought Hickey had the most potential of those on the board, but that they weren't as confident in him reaching it, as they were confident in others reaching their respective LOWER potential.
That's where that HF number/letter ranking comes in so handy. So if they had, say, Alzner as 6.5(B), Hickey maybe was an 8.0(C).
So they took a chance (a swing) on getting a potential 8.0 guy into the pipeline, with the risk being sacrificing a more sure thing with a lower potential reward at the end of the day.

Maybe, I think when putting into context of, "The one thing that shows up (as a negative) is the darn backend." To me it seems as if the pick was made with the defensive depth in mind. Not who was the best player(although from other statements, Hickey was very high on their board).
If our defensive depth was better at the time of the draft, does Lombardi still "take a swing on Hickey"?

Well, he said that we may potentially have a couple of 5-7 guys. So he wanted someone with a greater chance of ending up as a 1-4 upon reaching his potential.

That is a good interpretation. I 100% agree with you on that.

There's a bunch of different ways to look at it. But the references to our defensive depth make me believe that he Hickey was not perhaps #4 on the Kings board. "It's thin down there". To me it just seems that Lombardi was more or less freaked out by lack of defensive depth and pulled the trigger on Hickey or "took a swing".
