I reckon Lombardi only wants to sort of keep a lid on the KOPITAR euphoria, so:
a) he can sign him cheaper to his well deserved 5mil+/year extension
b) and keep him under the radar (if that's even possible), so teams won't make offer for KOPITAR.
c) to develop his so-called potential - what do you mean potential - he is already exceeding everyones expectations but I also want him to improve year in and year out and become the next Joe Thornton, Forsberg, ...
Kopitar is already a very, very good player. However, I feel his All-Star selection was a bit premature. He is not in that "elite" group of NHL talent yet.
He has plenty of time and the apparent ability to be in the upper echelon, so let's not get all teary-eyed when you mis-interpret a 3rd-hand comment from our GM which is actually pretty spot on, if he was even quoted accurately.
I agree that he isn't part of the 10-15 elite players in the NHL yet but is fast approaching as he is getting more and more confident.
He still has to work on his faceoffs as was apparent from tonights game as some other games, maybe also needs more toughness, checking in his game but will become a superstar in a year or two.
He would really benefit greatly if DL brought in someone like HOSSA, as he needs someone that challenges him to be even better.
Just wait till next year as he gains some more muscle and grit.

Lombardi has said on numerous occasions that Kopi is a "special" player, so I could only assume saying he isn't special is a strategic move on his part. Either way, there is no doubt we have something special in Kopitar. So who cares?
Sorry Doc, with Lombardi, his inflection means more than his myriad of words. How the hell do we know what he means by "special"?
Kopitar could top out at 70-pt Saku Koivu type rather than a true "superstar". Is that special?
woah woah woah... you and I are in agreement here.
Lombardi was in no way slamming Kopitar. He was praising him and his skills. All he said was that Kopitar has the potential to be a (my words not his) "once in a lifetime" kind of "awesome super rad bodacious" player but that he's not there yet.
EDIT : and just to be a thread bitch... hey mods can we merge this with my thread where the quote comes from?
