About This Page: This is a discussion on LA Kings Talk within the LetsGoKings.com forums, at Los Angeles Kings Hockey Fan Forum. 2 goals high glove side. Absolutely ****ing shocking...
Yup. A butterfly style goalie getting scored up high. Absolutely ****ing shocking...
What's even more shocking is that there are so many people here that don't understand that the difference between a mediocre butterfly goalie (Garon) and a good one is the ability to not get scored on high to the glove side 2-3 times a game...
If Garon was elite, he never came close to showing it here. Period. And to say that he's better than Aubin is a silly statement to make -- Aubin's a backup, always has been. Not much of a ringing endorsement to say that Garon is better than a career backup.
Garon's had an impressive half-season. I still would rather have LaBarbera. Before the spear to the ribs, LaBarbera was right around the top 10 goalies in the NHL.
If you're talking strictly about goaltenders, JLB and Aubin have the King's with the worst record in the entire league. So is your asinine arguement that Garon is somehow worse than the worst in the league?
Yeah!
Also, Kopitar is nowhere near as good a player as Jozef Stumpel! If Kopitar was better, his team wouldn't be in last place!
I think a lot of teams give up on goalies a bit too quickly. In my opinion LA is one of the guiltier teams when it comes to this. Garon needed a shot and a decent defense much like any other goaltender. I just don't think that LA, with the defense that they have put out on the ice the past 2 seasons, can adequately evaluate goaltending performance. At the very least I think it handicaps them a bit.
Still, way too many people here would be fine if we trade JLB. Hell, many people here WANT him to be traded...
But from January 26th-April 16th, the Kings play 30 games of which Garon starts 27 (LaBarbera actually played the final 2 games of the season)
In those 27 games, he loses 6 in a row, then wins 5 in a row, THEN goes 3-8 the next 11 games with a 4.09 gaa.
THEN, back to back shutouts gave Kings fans hope going into April but what happens?
Garon loses the next 4 and is pulled in favor of LaBarbera.
I'm glad you mentioned the spring of 06. Garon's numbers did go way down. But do you also remember the increased quality (and quantity) of shots he faced night after night? He seemed be facing 7, 9 or more shots from right in the slot every game. Defensemen clearing out the rebounds or the opposing forwards? please... Any of Garon's 4.09 GAA reflect on the D?
I don't remember seeing a team quit defensively so bad before, but the offense quit too.
His back-to-back shutouts you mentioned? Both 1-0.
His 4 losses in a row? The "offense" scored 4 goals (shut out twice).
It's just easy to blame the goaltending. Get that one bad guy out of here and that'll fix this team.
And why not start JLB for the last 2 games? Garon had just started 27 of 28 games(?), with no competent backup since JLB had been of town for much of that time.
This team was in 1st place and 13 games over .500 in Jan 06, then the roof caved in. You seem to be placing most (if not all) of the blame on Garon.
JLB is here, Garon is gone, fine. Hopefully JLB can step up next season to approach the level Garon played at in 05-06.
What's even more shocking is that there are so many people here that don't understand that the difference between a mediocre butterfly goalie (Garon) and a good one is the ability to not get scored on high to the glove side 2-3 times a game...
Quite a difference between letting in a high shot from the blueline and one from 10 feet out in the slot. 2 of the 3 goals against Garon were pretty bad defensive breakdowns and one could make the arguement that the first one was as well.
