Hossa didn't see Atlanta as a team that offered to be a serious threat in the playoffs even if they could reach the extra season in the near future. Problems ran deeper than just the NHL roster. The entire development structure had cracks.
The Thrashers are to blame. Like many NHL teams Atlanta allows its AHL affiliate team to sign its own players. What's unique is the number of players the Thrashers allow to be signed. Those players belong to the Wolves, not the Thrashers.
The Chicago Wolves hockey team is an independently owned organization. It doesn't have to worry about playing Atlanta systems. It's not Thrasher development first. They play Wolves hockey. They don't have to be on the same page.
Just win baby. Make some money. There's nothing on the back of the jersey that says "prospect". The Steve Martins of the world are being paid by the Wolves who want their monies worth.
Head coach John Anderson isn't an employee of the Thrashers. That too is unique. His agenda is different. He's got to win for his bosses who aren't a parent NHL club. It's not that he looks to derail Atlanta's development plans. It's just that the best guy gets the ice time and the Wolves won't eat their own. That's the structure.
That system "rules" from an LA perspective (get the prospects their PT), though certainly not from a Manchester perspective (winning is apparently inconsequential).
It's not as if the Wolves are a chaotic group of non-prospects who have nothing to do with the Trashers. They've got some good young kids playing for them like Sterling, Oystrick, Pavelec, Valabik, etc. Kari Lehtonen spent several seasons there as well.
The Wolves are generally very good each year, and 07-08 is no exception. They'll get to the playoffs and give their prospects a little more ice time. The Monarchs....not so much.

You know I'm a Monarchs fan, but this is Let's Go Kings...
Nevertheless, I feel for you, really, and hope the continued influx of quality draftees brings success. And a little veteran leadership wouldn't hurt.

I think the real problem from a Kings perspective comes not so much from the lack of veteran leadership as it is the fact that you've got so many prospects in Manchester that some guys aren't going to get ice time either way.
That's been the case at times with Dravecky and Cliche and Murray. Boyle, Purcell, Moulson, and Gauthier are established top sixers with Lewis and Tukonen getting thrown in the mix there as well.
Dravecky's now in Reading, presumably getting more playing time, and I think some of the guys would be better off with him.

I feel your pain, since my favorite team currently sucks right now, too. I think the stronger the Kings get as an organization, the better the prospects for success in Manchester. Not much consolation now, but in 2-3 years Manchester should be well-stocked with good young players, and those guys who are a little older (like Gauthier) who are good AHL players but unlikely to make the leap to the NHL.
Given how much I hate the Kings' system on D, I'm not sure having their positioning & responsibilities ingrained from an even earlier career stage is a good thing. (Obviously having all your assets under control is a good thing if you're DL or whoever's wielding the Excel spreadsheet.)
In the end, for various reasons, only so many guys make it to the NHL. I suppose that with Lombardi drafting high for 4 drafts or so he'll have better odds for guys making it to the NHL. We'll see...
The Monarchs (you know that team so rich in prospects it's almost embarrassing) showed up for the first of the 6-periods they played this past weekend. Seems like your young studs of the future have packed it in and are looking forward to joining their Kings brethren for some early golf...
Not much Ruling in the Kingdom this season...

I would expect a franchise that has been in existence for more than 40 years to have its **** together, both organizationally and depth wise, more than one that has been in the NHL for 9. What's pathetic is how long it has taken the Kings to put those pieces in place.

Manchester Monarchs has only been in existence since 2001 and, as Lombardi mentioned at the GM Breakfast, the Kings never had their own minor league team in order to properly develop prospects until then. Now the Kings management are trying to do it the right way...
