About This Page: This is a discussion on LA Kings Talk within the LetsGoKings.com forums, at Los Angeles Kings Hockey Fan Forum. [quote=darby;1061005]Dude.
It's suppos ed ly.
Not "suppose-of-ly."
Not "supposably."
Supposedly.
Wow I am confused.
he had no more or no less potential than Dan Cloutier or Jason LaBarbera.
"doing well in Edmonton" ???
he's playing the same there... Oilers fans are happy likely because he beat out the other mediocre goaltender they have who just so happens to also be at the end of his own unspectacular career.
at age 30, Mathieu currently stands on a 15-11-1 record with a 2.53GAA and a 9.14 Save %.
at 28 and $275,000 cheaper, Jason currently stands on a 13-18-1 with a 2.90GAA and a .911 save %
BOTH goaltenders are a 4/5-game winning streak or losing streak away from (essentially) a .500 record and pretty identical numbers... i think the question of why he wasn't re-signed is as rhetorical as the questions over why they even traded for and rolled the dice on Dan Cloutier to begin with.
the Oilers are currently 9 points ahead of Los Angeles and i honestly believe that gap will have narrowed significantly by the time it is all over, and Mathieu will NOT win 30 games.
Did I say something to upset you? This is a thread about Mathieu Garon, right?
Disclaimer: Before I say anything, because I generally like what you post and agree with your stances, I'll admit that I don't claim to be an expert on hockey, I don't work for TSN, I'm American, and I don't actually have ice running through my veins... that would be cold. Nor do I have the time to watch every game on Center Ice (I can't even afford the damn thing). I just love the game and I found a public message board where I can drink an unacceptable amount of beers and publicly post my opinions on our beloved 30th place team.
I agree with your first point that Garon had/has around the same potential as Cloutier and JLB...
Cloutier's potential didn't pan out, and barring a miraculous and historic comeback, he's done. JLB, I would argue (if you can see through a number of things working against him), is showing signs of living up to his potential (a slightly above-average NHL goaltender).
When I say Garon is "doing well in Edmonton," I mean that he once again is showing that he can be a #1 goaltender in the NHL, granted he is doing so on a very much below-average team... I don't remember hearing of any significant injuries he has sustained this season, and he seems to have come through when Edmonton needed someone to stabilize their net, which is more than he was able to do while in a Kings uniform... He does seem to be stealing games for them, though. You kind of made the point yourself (beating out another "mediocre" goaltender, etc. Who beats a mediocre goaltender? A slightly above mediocre one.): A goaltender's record says more about the team as a whole than it does the goaltender himself. If you think LaBarbera is a big reason why the Kings sit as low as they do in the standings, then we just disagree... there's no argument to be had.
As for your point about the gap narrowing between Edmonton and the Kings, I'll go a step further and predict that we'll finish ahead of them when all is said and done, much to the wild dismay of our Stamkos lovers.... (we're not getting Stamkos).
Oh, and Garon's save percentage is much better than 9.14%
Garon wouldn't have signed here for a max deal after last season. He should have had the starting gig but lost out to a lesser player for politics. Not the first time it happened and not the last either.
and i thought i made it rather clear about LaBarbera and WHY they didn't bother with Garon. Jason is providing the same goaltending for less money... honestly, i think he's been a bit better than anything we've seen of Garçon save for Mathieu's penchant for "stealing" games during the slam-dunk contest they have to have at the end of overtime.

exactly (emphasis mine)... Jason in, Mathieu out.
Looking back I don't think I read your post right... You probably did make it clear, I'm just trying to make the argument that LaBarbera is better than Aubin, and therefore:
LaBarbera/LaBarbera > LaBarbera/Aubin
and
Garon = slightly better than LaBarbera
so
Garon/LaBarbera >>> LaBarbera/Aubin
However,
Watti = too short-sighted to look up Aubin's salary and realize that in the grand scheme of things, JLB/Yo-Mama Jokester may in many ways be more beneficial (not better) than a Garon/LaBarbera team for the '07-'08 Kings.

i think that LaBarbera is actually better than Garon is... something i most definitely did NOT say two years ago when i was firmly in the Mathieu Garon camp.
Garon's stats last year were decent. He was a good, not great, goalie. Considering what we had I am still unclear why he was not signed. Anyone ever hear of why they did not want to sign Garon?
Again, I think it's all part of Lombardi's conspiracy. Same reason Crawford switches players. One more year of mediocre play to get a good pick and really build this team up.
The correct question is, "Why didn't we re-sign Garcon?"
Garcon was always a solid goalie for us, particularly in shootouts. I think he would have don't just as much, if not more, than Labs for the Kings this year.
But, as many have pointed out, in Garcon's absence, we've gotten that much closer to Stamkos or Doughty. And, that's fine with me.
And Garon wasn't signed because JLB was in the wings with his great performance in the AHL, Cloutier was expected to be good to go, and Garon never really sized his chances decisively. He was also gonna be more expensive than JLB, and who knows what he was like in the locker room.
First off, EXCUSE ME from making a simple little mistake with "a" word. I'm glad you can spell out the word in multiple ways. But really, I don't need a huge lecture on how to spell "a" word out that I misspelled accidently. It's only reality that it happens in life.
I doubt Garon was to be anything really expensive if DL was to hand him a contract. Garon knows where he stands with his performances and statistics that he has shown when with the Kings. He may of just maybe settled for no more than $900,000 a season (even though Kings can have someone like Aubin right now for $525,000). But Garon is a bit more of an upgrade than Aubin, I think so, definitly. Who we kidding anyways if JLB wasn't to make another $100,000 more to match or make more than Garon. It's not that big of a deal. But also, yes, who knows how exactly Garon was in the locker-room when with the Kings. But all I DO KNOW is that coming from Raffi Torres (who told a close friend of mine) that Garon in their locker-room atleast, Garon is a good person.

Please tell me you MEANT to say SIZED and not SEIZED!!! After bashing his spelling... PLEASE tell me you meant what you wrote?!
