Why 13-year contracts don't make sense (part 1)

all this talk about what to do with Anze Kopitar, our very own dizzyd shows remarkable timing in his shiny new blog about the effect(s) of signing players to Alexander Ovechkin-like contracts.

before you decide how much and how long a player like Kopitar should receive, take his little quiz (and remember, no cheating!) and try to have it ready for the second part of his blog.

FWIW, I wouldn't give a 13 year contract to anybody. I thought the initial RDS report of AO's 6 year deal was a score for the Caps, but 13 years is just too much of a risk--for both parties.

I still say give Kopitar in the ballpark of 5yrs./30M or 6 yrs./35M.

Sundin - 23g, 33g 1st 2 years - His 13th year, 31 goals in 70 games

Jagr - 27g, 32g 1st 2 years - His 13th year, he put up 54 goals

Tkachuk - 28g, 41g 1st 2 years - His 13th year, 27 goals

Modano - 29, 28g 1st 2 years - His 13th year, 14 goals

Selanne - 76g 25g (only 51 games) - His 13th year, 48 goals

Sakic - 23g, 39g 1st 2 years - His 13th year, 26g in 58 games

Jimmy Carson - 37g, 55g 1st 2 years - His 13th year..... whoops!

Lemieux - 43g, 48g 1st 2 years - His 13th year his was sick, but in his actual 13th year 28 goals

a 7 year deal for a player like kopitar i think is perfect. if things are looking good for him and the team 5 years in, give him an extension.
