13 year unconditional contracts are absolutely insane. I wouldn't ever give one out as a GM. Of the players on that list , because there wasn't a none of the above, I picked A, F and I only because they showed continued improvement over their beginning years.
does a two part blog really need to be written on the subject considering only Philadelphia and Washington are handing out contracts of that nature? It's not as thought teams that offer contracts that long are of the norm and everybody already knows why it's a stupid thing to do.
The CBA expires in 2011, right? Aside from making sure the expirations of key players' contracts are staggered, not going too far past the Next Great Unknown in the labor situation would be my only constraint in contract lengths.

i don't know if that would necessarily be my only constraint. it would however most certainly be the first footnote to every constraint i could list.
1. some people need to have something explained to them in detail, because they (for whatever reason) are having a little difficulty seeing past their own nose... it happens.
2. some people need the re-affirmation and ability to yell out "i told you so" to their unresponsive computer monitors.
oh and, D. Rick DiPietro was also signed to a f***tacular contract, and all of this is a sign of an upward trend.
sounds like some of the people who this thread aims to epiphanize might qualify as GMs of NYI, Philadelphia and Washington.
what baffles me is pre lockout fans were in turmoil because players would change teams year to year and there was no "team identity". Players chased the money and no loyalty to teams, fans were pissed.
Now with the new CBA, players are being given very very long term contracts at young ages meaning they should stay most of their career with the same team, the team that drafted them. But you have the same fans now complaining about the contracts being too long.
Well I got news, you can't have it both ways. You either want the players to be with the team long term or you want them to jump teams year to year. Take your pick. What you will have to remember is despite how many years or how many RFA contracts, etc.. are handed out, it doesn't matter because as long as salaries are tied to revenues the owners will always make profits, and afterall, that is what really matters doesn't it?
13 year contracts make as much sense as signing Goalies who are coming off surgery to 3 year deals worth $9 million without ever seeing them play in one NHL game to see how well they have recovered.
(Dean, this was your biggest boner...hope getting your rocks off that ONE TIME was worth it. NEVER,EVER,EVER, NEVER AGAIN!!!!! RIGHT??????)
