I know that the Ducks are a better team than the Kings and won the Stanley Cup last year and were the Western Conference Champions the year before, but do they have more fans and get better ratings than the Kings? While the Kings havent accomplished as much, they have been in SoCal for a longer time. Does anyone know the numbers on this?
Who gets better ratings/more fans? ... Does anyone know the numbers on this?
TV ratings technology has not advanced far enough to be able to distinguish two signals that are buried that far down in the noise floor. Perhaps someday science will solve this vexing problem.
I can tell you this... even though the Ducks won the Stanley Cup. Keep in mind that their building has 17,174 seats. But for the victory celebration/parade thing... I think it was under 15,000 people even bothered to show up. I think a real fan would make the effort to show to the celebration. Plus, it was on a Sunday afternoon, so you can't complain about it being on a workday. Plus I think around 100 of them were probably Kings fans who just wanted to see the Cup in person.
As for their season seats being sold out, if you look on Ebay... you'll notice that some sellers have like 20+ seats and are just suddenly ticket holders to make profit. The profit they rake in during the playoffs is a great amount, as they charge way over face value for it. During the regular season, I don't know how their profiting though, I've seen tickets being sold there cheaper than Kings tickets sometimes.
Don't get me wrong though, the Kings may have been here longer... but we have a crappy fanbase also. We can't sell out Staples Center really, and when we do... about 20% of the fans there are fans of the other team. Did you see the Maple Leafs game? I don't care that we're in last place, but having more than 50% of Toronto fans is unacceptable.
TV Ratings are usually bogus and its hard to determine which has more fans. Growing up, I always assumed that the team on FSN West is the "main" one, and the one on FSN West 2/Prime Ticket is the secondary teams.
FSN West - Lakers, Kings, Angels, Galaxy
FSN Prime Ticket - Clippers, Ducks, Dodgers, Chivas
Who knows really! But great topic.

The Kings have only been here 5 years longer than the Ducks. Everything BG (Before Gretzky) has been forgotten.

The Kings did terrific at the box office from 2002-04 when they had injury-riddled non-playoff teams. 3 of every 4 home games were sold out IIRC.
When times get tough in OC, I doubt if their turnstiles spin as much as the Kings did during their lesser years.

20% away fans is pretty damn good for LA.

The Kings cordially invite you to buy more tickets to give away to friends, family, and LGK posters with names that evoke memories of great defensemen from the past.

I don't know abt trying to debate which team has the most fan base because it seems to me that many people jump on the bandwagon of a team that's winning. That's a majority of Duck fans. Fans who have stayed with the Kings, even though they've never been a top winning team, indicates to me that it's much better to have dedicated fans thru thick and thin, even though fewer, than the amount of ones who love their team because they've won a cup.

The fact that we have our seats filled up with fans of rival teams shows another interesting point. Southern California seems to have a lot of hockey fans, but not necessarily alot of Kings fans. I wonder if you add up the total number of fans of hockey teams that are not Kings or Ducks, if they would rival the number of Kings fans. Personally I know more Red Wings fans here in LA than I do Kings fans.
