Default what they're saying: 12/30 flames edition

first of all, phaneuf?
glad he got booted from the game.

second of all, i miss putting these together after wins.

third of all, i hope you all have a great new year's eve.

-I wonder if Downtown Brown will be wearing a mirror on his helmet tonight. Go get him Gio!

-Kings will have pretty well a full roster tonight including Mikka's good friend Ryan Smyth. They won't beat the Kings with a crappy effort like the last one against a depleted Kings lineup.

wtf?

-Doughty should keep his head up

-Regehr, Phaneuf, and Bouwmeester all destroy Doughty in attempts to be named to the team.

-Ersberg is definitely in tonight. Something to do with Quick playing tomorrow and issues going to the US from Canada so they can't leave tonight. Its going to be an early morning travel day and a wait in customs so no Quick in back to back games on this trip.

-Kipper plays out of his head tonight and that gives the team a chance to get going.
Gio scares the crap out of the LA captain, or the LA captain tries to hurt Gio and hurts himself.
Smyth spends all night in Kipper's crease and as a result the Kings are called for a large number of offsides. Flames win.
Go Flames Go.

-Williams - out
Stoll - out
The Kings aren't really more healhty than last time. Simmonds is back but he's still nursing the knee injury a bit.
The only difference this time is that you could officially say now that the Flames have been slumping.
I think this one could be anybody's game. Its probably going to be physical and when my two teams play each other I just hope nobody gets hurt.

-Then why is he playing?

-Because he can? He was cleared by the doc to play but he looks like there's still discomfort. He just had surgery on before Christmas. He's not a liability, by any means, but you can see a difference in his skating.

-If it's affecting his skating maybe he shouldn't play? I'm always a little wary of players jumping back in too soon after injury, and Simmonds is one of my favorite non-Flames; wouldn't want to see him re-aggravate something.

-I agree. I wonder if he came back too soon because Stoll and Jones weren't close. And now does he stay because Williams went down. He's become an important player for the Kings and the last thing I want to see is an injury made worse because of returning too soon.

-Five minutes for hitting too hard... that's the NEW NHL, bay-bee!

-Ivanis jumps... David Moss?
Terry Murray is getting fined for sure for that one.

-Refs punishing the result instead of the actual play.

-Kopitar has the wind knocked out of him so Phaneuf gets a game, it's absolutely ridiculous.

-How in the hell is Dions hit deserve a game misconduct? BS A penalty for being a little rough but a game? gimme a fn break. Ive seen hits like that 100 times and a hell of alot worse and nothing.
I am pissed.

-So Phaneuf got ejected becuse Kopitar got winded and his helmet fell off? Weak.

-Intent to injure.

-Are you serious about that? How do you identify an intent to injure?

-The helmet coming flying off and Kopitar lying still on the ice sold it. Not to mention the Kings players coming to this defense. The refs really didn't have much of a choice.

-Phaneufs gone for the game so the league won't need to enforce any further disciplinary action.
I was so relieved to see Kopitar get up tho. A dangerous looking play to say the least.

-Conroy!! Finally LOL

-CONNY!!!
YAY FOR HIS FIRST!!!!!
LMAO @ ersburg BTW

-Penalty shot?!?!?!?!?!?! WHAT THE HELL?!?!?!

-He missed...HAHAHAHHHA Nevermind. You can have the penalty shot.

-The reffing in this game is a freaking Joke. If that is apenalty shot then we should have at least 50 a year.

-The refs are making up the rules as the game go's on.

-Good game considering they were down a defenseman.

-For all I have been hearing about Doughty today, I really wasn't impressed.

-I'm glad that Moss got up after Ivanans elbowed him. He could've rolled around like a puss and drawn the major too, but he didn't.
Good to see that there's one team left in the NHL with a ballsack.

-Good thing the Flames fans in attendance didn't boo Ivanans after that elbow. Judging by some of the posts on the main board, there were already some hurt feelings tonight over Kopitar being booed. Classless, I tell you! Just classless!

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE KINGS GET ANGRY?

Quote:
"It's just a dirty play," said O'Donnell. "We talk about the players not having respect and why are there so many concussions. He didn't have to do that. He plays hard, he's not the brightest guy, he runs around a little bit.

It was a play that didn't have to happen. There's one thing to play hard. [Robyn] Regehr plays hard, [Jarome] Iginla plays hard, [Daymond] Langkow plays hard. He just plays stupid sometimes.
On Phaneuf's hit...

And Sutter... ---->>

Quote:
"That's one of the dirtiest hits in the game," said Murray afterwards. "That's been addressed at the league level and that's why the referee called a game misconduct."

Sutter saw it differently.

"It's a non-call. The icing was waved off, it's a foot race for the puck," Sutter said. "I always stand up for my players."

-Also, I liked how Kopitar was booed all night. Serves him right for faking. He was smiling when he got to the bench. He was non-effective anyway.

...and people keep saying how Phaneuf is overrated, but man, Doughty is more overrated. He is a great hockey player yes, but the hype that people give him is just too much.

-Just watching SportsNet (Pacific) and they are SOOOOOOOOO biased.... They trashed Phaneuf for the hit and didn't say anything about how bad the call was on the pen. shot.

Gotta love OD's quotes.

No matter how I look at it, I can't see how that hit can be seen as "clean"

Thanks as usual rcc. These are definitely more fun after a victory, but they're still enjoyable for the most part.

Default The Mindset of a Fan

So I have been reading the Flame GDT, boards, and different bloggers and the general consensus they thought about the Kopitar hit was that

A) Kopitar embellished the hit
B) It was worthy of only a 2 minute interference call
C) Kopitar laying on the ice "acting" injured is what sold it
D) Phaneuf is so big and strong that, "If he wanted to hurt Kopitar he really would have!"
E) It was good hard hockey and that Gary Bettmen is trying to screw over them.

After dipping into that community I feel completely overwhelmed by homerific thinking. There were a handful of actual thinkers over there who were saying that it was a dirty hit, and that there is no place for that in the game. There was one fan in general who really came to the defense of Kopitar and the call, calling out Phaneuf and saying there is no place for hits like that in the NHL. He also said he was a huge Phaneuf supporter...SO it is good to know that they aren't all dumbass homers over there, and for the most part they were in agreement it should have been 2 minutes. But very few saw it as dirty, and a lot thought Kopitar acted and pleaded to the refs for him to be tossed.

Hey does anybody see the puck in this picture?? Me neither.....

And look at that body position by Kopitar, great acting indeed! I guess everyone read the funny caption instead of looking at the picture before calling it a clean hit and Kopi an actor.

Utter idiocy if you ask me. My question is, how exactly does one, or WHY exactly does one throw himself, face first, sideways, into the arms of Phaneuf and then force him to carry you into the boards? That is an acting job even Johnny Depp would have to applaud. And we all saw the hit....Flames fans expecting Kopitar to jump right back up and not lay on the ice in pain after what just happened? It is so funny, they are all on the boards yelling **** like, "OMFG DION DESTROY!" or "Is that his spleen in the 3rd row?" (All actual quotes) and then have the limited brain capacity to say, "God look at him sell that laying on the ground crying, what a baby." (again, actual quote) HOW THE **** DO YOU EXPLAIN THAT CONTRADICTION? Next time you get hit by a truck at full speed and don't get up I am gunna kick dirt on you and call you a baby for not jumping up immediately. **** makes no sense at ALL.

I understand that for the most part hockey fans, and announcers for that matter, will be homers. We have them here on this board, absolute homers, who never see it from the other side. I made a point of commenting on one of the Flames blog and asking, "If this were Matt Greene checking "Insert flames player here." Would you be crying for a 5 and an ejection?" It's a valid question. And something I always ask myself when I see a questionable call, or a tough play. Like the Brown Penalty shot call. I think that was a blown play. I won't say it's a good call just because it gave us a good chance (Thanks Brown.) I will say it is a terrible call for any opposing team, because it was just that. A terrible call. I find it very good to do something like that to keep myself honest with the game. I think many of us fans would benefit from doing it. But who knows, maybe many of you like sitting in your all Kings bubbles, just like many of the Flames fans like to see things throw Flame colored glasses. It was pretty frustrating reading their **** on their boards, but it's fine with me, because they will get hit harder with the reality that their team won't win a cup because of lack of something or other, (I dunno what they lack I am not an expert) rather then Gary Bettmen not wanting a Canadian team to win the cup, and kill themselves, further adding to why suicide is one of the leading causes of death in Canada.

As far as the Bettman comments go, and I see them around here as well, apparently Gary Bettman is trying to screw over EVERY SINGLE TEAM IN THE NHL. Did you guys know that??? Every single team. He doesn't want any team to win, he always favors team A over team B when things go against them. I hate that scapegoat ****. You know what, bad games happen, referees are human beings, they will blow calls, and they will change games, that is sports in general. But the amount of flak that Bettman gets for **** that has nothing to do with him is absolutely hilarious. I think Bettman has Center Ice, and just flips between channels and calls refs by a secret implant in their brain and alters calls and games on the whim depending on who he wants to see when that night.......

Thank you "Habz4life" for posting this on photobucket

Yup move em all to the states! That is his plan! better not take him to Detroit.....

At least one fan there has an axe to grind....I think he embellished the hit on this picture though...

But anyways for the most part, from my experience, this board is pretty ****ing honest. I have checked a lot of GDTs for post game comments. I love reading what people say, and I love listening to homer rant and response. It amuses me to my very soul. We aren't bad at all and I applaud these boards for being pretty fair to other teams.

And YES for anyone wondering, It's not just because they are Ducks fans and I am bred to hate them being a Kings fan, they really are about the worst when it comes to hockey knowledge and homerism. But when you listen to Ahlers and Hayward every game it bleeds all over you.

Homers are an inevitable part of the sport. But there is a fine line between being a homer, and being a downright dumbass. I think our boards do a good job at being pretty fair, and it comes from a long history of listening to Bob Miller, Jim Fox, Daryl Evans, and Nick Nickson. While homers at times, they always give props and make calls based on Hockey and not on what jersey they support. Personally, I find that watching Kings games with that attitude makes it easier to be a student of the game, and it also makes it easier for me to find something to rant about when i feel like making a post or a thread

Have a happy New Years Eve folks, and don't let tonights game ruin your night if it gets bad. Just start drinking early if it does.

Had a hit like that happened in our playing enviroment the guy who gave the hit would have probably been jumped and never invited back to rink again. Its not the hit, its the location of the hit, it's the intent of the hit. When you line a guy your looking to make him innefective in a puck retrieval situation, press him to the boards or neutralize his stick. This just looked bad all the way around, if Kopi didn't have a thick neck, he might be nursing a spinal injury right now.
I would be willing to bet every penny I have ever earned in my life that Kopitar saw stars, and his ears were ringing after that hit, hence the slow to get up situation.
I can't wait to see what happens.

Just watched it over and over in replay.

Ill tell you what makes this dangerous

PHANEUF SLOUGH FOOTED HIM ON THE WAY TO THE CORNER.

Watch it in slow mo. Kopi is coming around the corner and Dion sticks his knee out to cut Kopitar down.
Thats how Phaneufs knee ends up in Kopitars Sternum.
This is good for 10 games if you watch it in very slow Mo.

Sutter is a C*CK smoking douche **** face ****ing ***hole. Let me smack your head against the glass at 30(or so) mph and see how fast you cry like a ****ing bitch!
This is the one and only game where I wanted to see blood from the other team, preferably the coach.

wow jay, that was an essay. and honestly, i couldn't believe how many people were saying that it was a good hit and that kopi embellished. i'd really enjoy having them swap places with kopi and then letting dion hit 'em in the same way.

and i believe phaneuf will get his. i don't think the kings will be the ones to dole out the punishment (this team needs balls), but someone somewhere will pay him back.

Didn't see the hit when it happened, but I saw it afterward. Dirty hit, Flames fans are morons for booing Kopitar of all players. It wasn't his fault that Phaneuf did that, it was Phaneuf's fault! Kopitar seems like one of the nicest players in the league, plus he has never done anything to give fans a reason to boo him. Oh well, I guess it really doesn't matter.

I think everyone can agree the penalty shot was a dumb call. It was a pathetic attempt, too.

These games against Calgary have been pretty good (minus losing 3 of them,) but it could be one hell of a playoff series if the Kings get that far.

Thanks again rcc!
