oh....and I can almost promise you guys that DL will overpay him to come back. 2 years $9-
If Blake is unable to negotiate a contract after this season I am unsure if he will still play in the NHL.
The problem is, I think having Jack Johnson thrown into the mix has skewed things. We all know Jack Johnson idolized Rob Blake growing up, and similarly Blake idolized Larry Robinson growing up. When Blake got to LA Robinson took him under his wing somewhat and it is clear that Blake is attempting to do the same (if not even more) with Jack Johnson. Say JJ doesn't come to the Kings, does Blake even bother with these last few seasons?
All things considered, I think Blake realistically has 2 more years in him tops. When he declined to waive his NTC I considered the fact perhaps this was going to be his final season and thus he simply wanted to finish up the season here. However, upon further thought, I also now consider the fact that perhaps Blake (and possibly the org.) would consider another year due to the fact that there really is no proven 2nd leader who would be prepared to take over the C. Sure Thornton may be a vet, but with the little amount of ice time he gets it would be a moot point. In addition, most of the kids are just too young and inexperienced to take over such a role.
So what happens to blake after this season? I have no clue. I think a lot has to do with DL but I have no clue how he percieves Blake, I think he did probably shop him for the trade deadline so that shows he is not afraid to show him the door. Assuming DL may be interested in keeping him but not at his current salary, it will depend on how Blake is willing to budge with his pride. I think 1 year at 4 mill would be fair, but its hard for me to say not knowing each persons motives...
If Blake ever makes $2 million for any one season again from the Kings Lombardi should be fired.
You don't think Blake has DL by the short hairs? Even if he pulls off the dream draft day trade that brings back young d-man players/prospects, the vets are Lubo & Preissing. After 2 straight seasons in the cellar, mainly due to bad defense, you know he's going to be looking for an established vet that can plug in without any adjustment period or uncertainty. I'm pretty sure Blake will get a lot more than 2 mil and unfortunately, a NTC as well.
We're going to lowball Blake and get rid of him once and for all so, yeah, he won't be coming back. In a perfect world, that would happen......this, however, is not a perfect world.
But, it will be interesting to see if Blake walks the walk after talking the talk, for sure.
We SHOULD lowball the hell out of Blake or just tell him to take a hike. How funny would it be if Mr. I just want to do what's best for the team goes somewhere else next year for more money?
