About This Page: This is a discussion on LA Kings Talk within the LetsGoKings.com forums, at Los Angeles Kings Hockey Fan Forum. Reading these Q+As about the team's revenue and inability to make a profit comes with a very odd timing.

I just had a discussion last week with someone who is very good friends with Phil Anshutz and he had some very interesting things to tell me. He said Phil was one of the only ones during the lock out to stand up AGAINST the cap and basically lectured the other owners on why they bought their teams. He supposedly went on about how these teams were their passions and for entertainment, and that if any of the owners bought their teams as an investment they were poor business men.
Now this guy that told me that, has an incredible knowledge of the King's organization. Especially when you consider he is a diehard Avs fan and not a huge follower of the NHL as a whole. I've known him for a while and I'm very inclined to believe he knows what he's talking about. BTW, he is also friends with Tim Lieweekly.
If I assume he is telling the truth and not talking out his arse...why the hell would they be talking all this jive about profit right now if that is truly Phil's stance? Is there more going on than meets the eye, or is this guy I know out in left field?
BTW he also has some very interesting things to say about Tim L, most of which would be confirmation for many of you about his character.

If you are a diehard fan of any NHL team, dont you also follow the NHL as well?
Can I be a diehard Dodger fan but not like Baseball? I think being a diehard fan of one select team also covers the ground of following to some extent the rest of the teams in the league no?
Thanks for the info though...Im not bagging on you just curious as to how you can have one without the other.

My guess is, that nobody wants to lose money, even if they don't own the club for profit.
My guess is also, that he was against the cap, because the new CBA tied all this money sharing with revenues, not profit. I guess Kings ownership has been doing some bad business decisions and aren't able to make profit regardless of high revenue. Almost all of these big teams were probably against it, because they are giving money to other teams now. That's only my uneducated guess, have to repeat that again.
With the new CBA teams have become more worth, reached higher value. But Kings ownership is not interested in that, because they are here longterm and don't intend to sell it.
I also think, that Kings management can't just spend money like lunatics, they need to keep numbers close enough, regardless of what the owners think. It's called being a good manager and that's their job. Also when you raise the prices, you do need an excuse. Right now, that's the only excuse the management could have find. So the owners probably don't care much, but people running the club need an excuse anyway.
My two cents.

When you're rich die-hard means going to 5 games a season and if the team is good every home game of the playoffs.

Maybe my defintion of die-hard is off the mark then. Let me explain it this way then. He absolutely LOVES the Avalanche. They are his main interest, and he doesn't have much interest in the rest of the league. He won't be watching any more play-off games now that his Avs are out.
That is why when he knows the ins and outs of the Kings it is pretty convincing to me that he really is as close of friends with Phil and Tim as he claims. He knows about Phil having the team come to his ranch this year and LOTS of other goings on that the casual fan of Hockey or even a close follower of the Kings might not know.
Keep in mind we both live in NH...for me to to know ANYONE that knows ANYTHING about the Kings is a miracle by itself! Nevermind know the owner, GM, TL and lots more about the team.
BTW, He also says that Phil is VERY passionate about the Kings and very much wants them to win the Stanley Cup...contrary to what most here (including myself) believe. Tim on the other hand is just like what most people believe him to be...A blow-hard who tells people what they want to hear. But he still thinks Tim is a great guy and is close friends with him as well.
If Uncle Phil showed up to a single Kings game I might be inclined to believe your friend. Until then, I'll remain highly skeptical.
Buying the Kings was all about investment for AEG. It was ultimately a real estate deal. They were the key to building Staples Center. My father is an attorney and he was once invited to a Kings game by AEG. The night consisted of watching a Kings game in one of the suites and a small seminar or whatever you want to call it on how Staples Center was built. They explained exactly why the Kings were purchased and how owning the team was an important piece in getting the area built.
Of course this was about 8 years ago and I don't remember many of the specifics but I can tell you that Phil doesn't think of the team as just some hobby. He used the team to make money in other ventures and now that all of those plans are coming to fruition and he's raking in the dough, he wants to turn a profit on the team itself. He's already increased their value by creating farm clubs and building the training facility. At some point, once he's got all the money he can out the team, he'll sell it and make even more cash.
