At the trade deadline last season the Kings traded their long time Captain Mattias Norstrom for what basically will turn out to be a draft pick this year in the 25-30 range and Jaroslav Modry.
Mattias had a year left on his contract making 4.25 million.
Lombardi doesn't resign Aaron Miller, who winds up signing with Vancouver for 1.5 million.
Instead, Lombardi opts to sign Tom Preissing at 2.75 a year and Brad Stuart at 3.75.
Looking back, was trading Mattias Norstrom a mistake?
Have Prieissing and Stuart at 6.5 million been better than Miller and Norstrom at 5.75?
Would the Kings have been better or worse this season with Blake/Norstrom, Lubo/Miller, JMFJ/Dallman-Harrold???
Every one of us thought at the trade deadline last season that Dean was making deals to better the club - Conroy and Sopel and Cowan and Avery - but those players and picks won't come to fruition until at least 2010.
His free agent signings have been flops - nearly ALL of them. Not one Selanne amongst the group. Handzus' dreadful deal, an overpaid Calder, the lethargic Nagy and the underachieving Preissing and Stuart.
Which begs the question coming up on the trade deadline...
Do we trust Dean this trade deadline? Will the players he has to replace (i.e. next years crop of free agents) even CONSIDER coming to L.A., or are the Kings once again stuck with the leftovers?
Can Dean bring back those "on the cusp" players (like JMFJ and O'Sullivan) for Blake or Nagy or Stuart or are we just stuck with even more draft picks in the hopes that four or five years down the road they'll turn into the next Moulson (24) or Boyle (23) or Harrold (24)
Many seem to be excited about trading away roster players without being sure what we're getting in return.

Trading Norstrom was a huge mistake. Instead of battling with Detroit for the number one in the Western conference this season, we are dead last in the league!
according to Dean, Miller wanted more than a year, Modry was willing to take the 1-year deal. So he won out. Maybe for this whole year it would be nice to have Norstrom. But he might have what? Pushed us into 'black hole' area? At this point, I'd rather have the 1st round draft pick and whatever we can get out of that swedish D-man Johan Fransson.
The pick is dependent on the Dallas's playoff performance. If they're the first team to get eliminated, it'll be the 16th pick, if they're the second, it'll be the 15th..and so on..if they reach the finals..it'll be the 29th or 30th pick. New rules that went into affect for the draft order.
With Dallas's playoff record (read: first round flops), it'll likely be in the to 20, a tradeable commodity come draft time if you ask me.

Can I get some of what you're smoking?
There is no way this team with Mattias is at that level. If you think that you're fooling yourself and I am sad for you.

Not at all.

both preissing and stuart chip in a heck of alot more than miller and norstrom on the offensive end.

we probably would have scored less goals, everything else would be the same, or even worse since having miller and norstrom would have been a much slower core of dmen.

how many times have you seen a selling team get immediate help? when a seller trades their players for rentals, they get replacements along with FUTURE help.

It's not his fault that these (one-time) stars didn't play up to their expectations. but hey, it's the kings, only players like armstrong have career years over here, i REALLY hope that changes!

there were many holes to fill in this past season, this season will be different. i trust Dean would want to take on a player that will fill in the top 2 scoring lines, unless another hole is created.

those three you named all went to college, only one of 'em actually being a PROJECT whom was drafted by the kings. It's not easy stealing players like cammi, JMFJ from teams for just RENTALS. sure, 1st rounders are thrown here and there, but not B rated Prospects, unless the opposing GM is just too desperate.

it seems to me, DL knows who he is trading for in exchange for the vets.
