What needs to be understood first and foremost is that the main reason for signing a UFA is not to use them as bait at the trade deadline.
For those that believe Nagy, Willsie, Calder, et.al. could possibly bring anything more than a 3rd round pick to L.A. in any one-for-one trade needs to hand in their “arm chair GM licenses.”
The UFA signing made by DL prior to this season were not based on what was wanted. It was based on what was available on the market. I can understand a player’s reluctance to sign with a bottom tier team. Hence the reason the only players left to sign were stiffs. No one else wanted them and they needed a pay check. DL signed these players late to fill in the roster and hope for the best. I’m sure there was effort to sign better players but nothing came to fruition. This alone should tell everyone exactly how much DL’s wonderful UFA signings are worth to the rest of the teams in the league. And it doesn’t stop with the UFA’s either. The team has a few veteran players that couldn’t be moved either.
People complain how the team sucks and the players suck but then think every player is worth at least a 1st round pick or a top flight prospect. It really is an absurd thought process.
The Kings had no expendable players that would bring back a useful return…plain and simple.
I would like to see what this team would really look like if DL listened to some of the ideas posted here and traded half his starting roster for picks, or just brought in players from Manchester, or overpaid for veteran players…oops! That one already happened.

"Given where we are right now, you certainly have to be active," Kings GM Dean Lombardi told The Canadian Press. "We've got some players who are free agents and we're in last place in the league. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure it out."
The key unrestricted free agent is Rob Blake, a 38-year-old star defenceman who controls his fate with a no-trade clause. Lombardi and Blake met last week to discuss the situation and will meet again probably later this week.
"There have obviously been a number of teams who have called on him," said Lombardi. "Since Christmas he's played at a very high level. But we'll see what happens."
Expendable, yes. Able to bring a return? No. As is being posted all over the board here, there are real reasons why Blake couldn't bring a return.
that reason happens to be that Rob Blake would only allow us to work with 2 out of 29 teams. considering you have to get the other GM to agree and the deal has to be good enough to pull the trigger, the reason we couldn't get a #1 for him has more to do with his refusing to let us get the best deal.

Nobody on this board said or even thought that EVERY player was worth at leats a first round draft pick. Blake was the only one. Stuart was considered a possibility by some because defenseman were supposedly in short supply. Nobody here mentioned Nagy, Thornton, Calder, Preissing, or Modry as being worth a first round draft pick.

That is a very real reason. we got played (we the fans). Add to that that Blake was not the only D-man buyers could trade for (campbell, and foote). But yes, Blakes' NTC was the killer. But we all know this already. Hence the Horse is still Dead, and still gettin quite a beating, lol.
Picks, picks, and more picks is all we could have ( an were probably offered) for Blake and the other scrubs, if anybody wanted them. I have a feeling DL wanted more than a 1st round pick for Blake, and unless he got it, no deal. Matty got us a 1st, and 2 players in return, and like he said about the Stuart trade, he may have used that deal as a model for Blake. If the return isn't there , you don't make the deal just to make a deal or to satisfy the LGK mob.
With a bone fracture in his ankle and needing to play his way back into shape... Yeah, sure... I'd take him and give up a #1 pick... jeez... how 'bout 2 #1's. [sarcasm off]

the ones with the jumper cables on the horse are the ones who ignore the fact that we could have recieved decent compensation for him if he hadn't handcuffed us. they keep bringing the horse back and we keep sending it back to the glue factory.
