PORTLAND, Maine - The U.S. Men's National Team rolled to a 5-1 victory over Sweden here tonight in its lone tune-up prior to beginning play in the 72nd annual International Ice Hockey Federation World Championship on Friday (May 2) in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
I was there, so i figured i should share some observations. O'Sullivan's goal was on a rebound after an amazing save by the Swedish goalie, really just picking up the trash. I actually wasn't sure he had scored it until they announced it.
Brown's came as team USA had good puck possession in the zone and had Sweden backed off. From behind the net Brown walked out on the goalies right, stickhandled and shot in a fluid motion for the score. Brown also had some nice hits, taking advantage of the small ice. He took a team Sweden player into the team USA bench and had some other small hits.
Team USA didnt have names on the jerseys, so i can't remember the lines too well. Brown and O'Sullivan were on different lines, but both got significant powerplay time. In the exhibition shootout after the game, both failed to score.
Team USA is really young but fun to watch and super talented. Other than some miscues on breakouts and the powerplay, Team USA looked great. It will be interesting to see how they fare on the international size ice (cumberland county arena is NHL size since it is a AHL stadium) especially because they were surprisingly physical this game. It was nice to see Kings players so far from LA and seeing them do well was a bonus!
On a side note, former King Tim Gleason looked solid but not spectacular, seeing a lot of playing time.
