Seems to me that with the exception of Calder, all of these contracts should've been switched around. The guys who got the long deals should've gotten one-year deals, and visa versa. I'd much rather have Stuart signed long-term over Preissing. The way Nagy has been playing (before he got injured), I take him over Handzus considering the price and everything involved. Not saying I'm a big fan of any of these guys, but Calder is the only one that (at this point) I'm happy with the terms of the contract. The way Stuart has been playing the last 15-20 games, he is a perfect #4 for this team moving forward. Tom Pressing on the other hand....... sucks for the most part. I'd take Modry over that guy. Stuart is one of the only defenseman bringing a consistent physical game, and as much as he didn't impress me at the start of the season, he is consistently impressing me these days, given that he is a #4 defenseman. Handzus is ripping us off everyday. As much as I love his defensive game,,,, there is nothing else this guy brings for 4.5 million per. I say sign Stuart to an extension and do whatever it takes to get rid of Pressing come deadline time. Thoughts?

1st off Handzus is making 4 million per. Handzus has lots of intagibles other than point production. He's been on lots of Flyers teams that made the playoffs and is a consumate professional. I think he will teach the young kids how to play, provide great defensive play and show these young kids how to win. Plus, I believe he will show much more offense next year. .Other than that I like Preissing. He's solid. He's a good 2nd PP QB, a good 4th or 5th Dman and signed at a relatively cheap 2.75 or so. Stuart has been great of late, still want to see him traded and then maybe we can talk about sigining him again in the offseason. Nagy has been inconsisant by when he's been on he been great. Calder has been solid and has fit well on a line with Handzus when they're together and done a nice job in front of the net on the 2nd PP unit.
Preissing just isn't a good fit on this team IMHO. Stuart seems to be slowly capturing his self confidence back from his days in San Jose which he desperatley needs. Nagy was a gamble and could be useful on a playoff team who needs an extra top 6 forward, especially now that we've seen a glimpe of what Purcell can bring and O'Sullivan has earned top 6 minutes. Calder is a really expensive 3rd liner... I'd keep him though and put him on a line with Moulson...
You can never truly determine the value of a role player who labors on a crappy team.
See Moen, Travis.
Rob Niedermayer is a good example of this too. On some of those bad Calgary teams, he was considered a waste of space. But on a playoff team his penalty killing, defensive play, and board work are invaluable.
Hmm I think you are getting a little carried away with your handzus evaluation, I have been enjoying his defensive play while on the penalty kill, and when the puck is in our zone even strength. Stuart has been very inpressive as of late and i think he will continue to gel with this team. Preissing and nagy have been a disappointment thus far and oh yea I love me some calder.

Ah yes, the Detroit Red Wings Syndrome.
I mean how else can you explain Daniel Cleary over the past two seasons. It ain't magic, people.
