If the Kings ends up with the #1 overall pick, they should all of their other draft picks for any of the #2nd #3rd or #4th overall picks. They get the potential face of the franchise in Stamkos and one of the elite Dmen they desparatley need. Funny that all 3 of the Dman make sense-Doughty was a kings fan and sounds like he would be happy to play here, Schenn was mention by Hickey as someone he hopes the Kings draft, and Bogosian is the big mean dman with an armenian sounding last name.
Quite frankly-even if the Kings end up selecting #2 overall; I offer all the remaining draft picks for the 3rd or 4th picks as well. Landing 1 will be great, 2 may be the deal that turns the entire franchise around.
a) Los Angeles - great weather, hot girls, crummy team, but a media haven
Media haven, yes. For basketball and baseball. Hockey? Not so much. Unless you're talking about the bandwagon media who suddenly shows up when the Kings are in the playoffs.
Other than that, I agree with everything you say. =D L.A is the place to be!
The NHL needs more eyeballs watching the game coast-2-coast on (national) TV. That means good teams in the biggest media markets. That means Los Angeles.
(Is there anybody naive enough to think that Rogie Vachon & Bruce McNall were sharp enough to 'sucker' the Oilers out of Gretzky back in '88?)
Bettman needs his experiment to succeed so he can expand again so he can put more money in the NHL coffers. He NEEDS the Atlantas and Nashvilles to be successful. So maybe Stamkos to one of those teams isn't really in the NHL's best interest, but it is in Bettmans. And Bettman IS the NHL right now.
I don't see them trading the first overall pick under any circumstances, for reasons I mentioned in another thread last week: General managers are human, and none of them want to go down in history as the idiot who traded away Yzerman II. That is the sort of thing that hangs around the neck of a hockey executive for the rest of his life and beyond. If you draft Stamkos and he turns out to be Daigle II instead, sure, you'll catch some hell -- but the fact will remain that everyone else thought it was a good pick too at the time of the draft. But if you deal him away and he becomes an elite player, you'll never hear the end of it. These guys worry about their legacy the same way a politician does, never underestimate that in the decision-making process. SS is head and shoulders the best player coming out this year, it is thought, so there really won't be anything to think about if the Kings have a chance to land him.

The media jumped all over #99 and it allowed team to be placed in San Jose and (gulp) Anaheim.
Gretzky put a **** load of folks in the seats, but then again his name was already the name of hockey. Even if Stamkos is a King, which i kinda hope he is, it will be a season or two before the general non hockey watching public starts flocking to the games. There is just too much going on in SoCal for folks to do anything on a consistent basis. That is except for the die hard Kings fan.
I do like the idea of picking him up #1 and then trading up to get the Dmen that we need to fill out the lineup. Let the skill we have up front destroy in the offensive zone while while our new D and what looks to be reliable goal tending cover their asses.
When LA wins a Cup, it will completely overshadow Anaheim. Anaheim can win again, but it's not Los Angeles.
Just like the Angels winning the WS. It wasn't a big deal because it's not Los Angeles.
When the Dodgers win the WS in the next yr or 2, the entire city will be shut down. And what glorious day that would be!
My cousin's husband is from Chicago and he's a huge Cubs fan. I asked him how he felt when the White Sox won the WS. He said, it's the White Sox. Nobody cares.
Trust me, they need LA to succeed.
BEST POST OF THE DECADE!!! There are only 3 teams that matter...Kings, Dodgers and the Lakers...in that order if you ask me. GO KINGS GO!
