Ok something ELSE that's been bugging me. I'm sick, so alot of things are bugging me right now.
A few threads ago for some reason or another that I cant' remember Jamie Storr was mentioned by me or someone else-- to which someone brought up breaking his confidence by bringing him up too soon and ot making that mistake with Bernier.
So here's my question-- I don't get this whole goalie/confidence thing. NOW don't go taking my statements to an extreme-- I understand that confidence plays a role. Contrary to popular opinion, I'm not an idiot. However, I don't understand how if, your a professional athelte that plays a sound techincal game, you confidence can be blown at 18 years old to the point that your whole career is shot.
Everyone loses games, especially when you are young.... In every sport (except ones like Tennis singles when it is just you vs the other person) it is a TEAM game and even at 18 you have to know every goal/point etc.. is not your fault. So how can a psyche be so fragile as to let a whole team get blown because you get shelled at 18 when you don't have a defense. Once you get a team with a defense and some experience, you still play a solid techinical game, so why can't you recover?
Thank you. I think that will be all of my deep thoughts for the night. I'm sure you are all very greatful for that.

Um well, I don't know about goalie confidence per se... but I do know about lacking confidence at a fairly young age. When a feller is a tender age, say 12-20 or so... it only takes so much to do long term damage to ones psyche. Take me for example... I am one handsome dude(all vanity aside... I do think I'm pretty good looking) and have been for years...but because of a few stupid incidents when I was younger... my confidence was nonexistent until about a year ago.
And now...like the caterpiller that turns into a butterfly.. I am spreading my wings and flyyyyyying away.

You're very cute, albeit demented. But I'm going to take your post seriously and ask-- if you can get your confidence back and go on... WHY CANT THEY?! THEY'RE PROFESSIONALS!

It is not as simple as that. Younger players are trying to prove themselves to their teammates, the league, whoever. Their confidence can be shattered because they lose all concept of what is going on. The thing with goalies especially, is they actually get a record posted to them, unlike a forward or a defensemen. Furthermore the stat that everyone looks at is the scoreboard. As unfair as it is the goalie is responsible for keeping the other team from scoring, poor defense or not.
The fact of the matter is, a young goalie trying to prove himself will a) think he is the one not doing well and blame himself and b) start to fall into very bad habits trying to make up for the defense which is causing him to fail. The young goaltender will pick up bad habits because all the things that go into good goaltending are based on trusting the five guys in front of you to do their job. When those guys don't do their job, you as the young goalie might try to do too much then develop bad habits.
The confidence can also be shaken simply because, you have been successful at all levels but not the NHL, thus you start to second guess if you are really up to the caliber of NHL goalie then you have shaken confidence. Remember 90% of the game is half mental. If you catch yourself thinking you will not be as good as you should be, you just need to train yuorself to be in the right position and react accordingly. When you lose confidence, you think. When you think, you are slow. When a goalie is slow, he scroed on.

All goalies are ****ing nuts. Their psyches are extremely fragile.
True story.
I've played in net for more than 23 years now, with year off here, a few off there... A bad game can get into your head and stay there for a long time. A bad series of games can be disastrous. A week or so after I got back from deployment I played pick up with a few friends and it had been about... over five years putting the gear on. I had a decent game, but I felt I should have been leaps and bounds better than I was. I damn near never got on the ice again. Once I relocated to Kansas City, Misery, I had to have some form of outlet, so I got back on the ice. I've had to learn the position all over again and differently than I knew it before. Age has helped, because now I can forget a goal, and I've calmed down a lot. Good luck finding a pro team willing to wait that long on a keeper, especially one that hasn't played in a long time.
It also doesn't help when you're told you're goalie of the future and this is going to be your team and they keep bringing in other starters and you spend the better portion of your "development" watching the games.

"they're," and not quite. their talent has enabled them fortunate enough to chose hockey as a vocation... it takes a LOT more than physical ability to be a professional.
