You know what, i'll probably get flamed for this. Screw the number one pick and screw stamkos. The kings have so many young players as it is. Right now, the kings are still looking at 2 first round picks and one of those will be in the top 5. In a deep draft, we're looking at 2 very good players for the future.
BUT, the notion that the kings need to tank or that winning is bad this year is completely insane (in my opinion). If you look at the ducks, i believe that one of the reasons that they are so good is that their young kids learned how to win fast. Getzlaf and Perry already seem like veteran players because of their playoff experience early on.
The Kings young players have to learn how to win. Even if the wins arent for a playoff spot, like this year. Winning is winning. We have to start doing it eventually. It's not good for this young team to lose so badly for an extended period of time. Guys like Brown have been here for a few years and havent seen much success. Kopitar is now on a team that is one of the worst in the league for 2 years running.
The fact that they've been winning recently is great, and i think it sucks when i see people on this board somehow finding a way to complain about that. I, for one, am happy that DL didnt ship away every veteran on this team for more picks. We have enough picks and prospects as it is. It's time to move on to the next level. Even if they wont make the playoffs this year, a foundation has to start being laid for the present. When i see the team play so well and beat teams that are playoff bound, it's great experience for this team - and i think we'll see that pay off next year.

I really think DL wants to draft a defensemen and you can bet there are more than a few teams that would love Stamkos. Whoever gets that #1 spot holds a ton of cards. Should the Kings get it, I really think he trades it for a young NHL ready defenseman plus that team's number one and potentially even more. I love the way the Kings are playing right now so getting that pick may not be possible but keep in mind, it's not just Edmonton we want to lose. It's the Lighting who are only one point ahead of us and just traded a big piece of their talent.

God I hope not. If we end up with the number one pick, we better take the best player available. If we need to trade for a young Dman, we have enough guys as trade bait, we should be able to pull that off without giving up the number one pick in the draft.

Have we EVER picked number one overall?
If you didnt learn from the trade deadline. NO ONE WANTS OUR DUDES. The only players other teams want from the kings are the young core.
In 1967, the kings picked Rick Pagnutti with the #1 overall.

You don't draft for need, since anyone you draft is going to take maybe 2-3 seasons to make it to the NHL.
In rare cases they can step in right away, but not likely, and especially not with a Dman.
If you get the number one pick and grab the best offensive player available, they you have leeway to trade one of your core guys for a young stud on the blueline.
No one on the Kings outside of the young core is going to bring you back a 1-2 Dman, ain't going to happen. Blake, Thorton, etc won't give you that return. Cammy should, and depending if we get the overall number one pick and who we actually select, there may be other young fowards to put up on the trading block for the right Blueliner.

They need defense so they wouldn't pick Stamkos anyway
Nonsense. DL will take the best player available as he has repeatedly said he would. He might trade down for a lower pick, but I would bet he'd prefer to take Stamkos and then trade a winger or promising prospect for a young D-man. The Kings DO need centers. Badly.
