SirJW, the ECHL is the most ridiculous league when it comes to forming a team. Every year the team basically starts out from scratch; player contracts are from year to year. The Royals (like every team) will get to "protect" only 8 players. There's usually a big turnover from season to season. I think this year we had 9 players return from last year, and one of those was a guy we signed out of college last March.
Then there's a salary cap, a limit on the number of veterans you can have on a team, guys moving up to AHL, guys heading to Europe, and players assigned by affiliates to further confuse things.

Now I'm going to go off and be depressed.
I don't know much about the echl, but shouldn't they only be able to protect those not under nhl contract? the i imagine kings could easily say we dont want you in elmira so we're bringing you up to manchester then loan you to ontario or reading
Crusader, you're correct. The NHL teams will assign players to their various affiliates as they see fit. It's only those under ECHL contracts who are protected.
