This should be called the LA Kings corollary. That any player, all things being equal, will tend to perform at a lower level than they are signed by the Kings than when they play on other teams.

Yet people still question why Lombardi insists on putting so much value in the draft picks and prospects...

Who is questioning that? I don't think anyone can debate the importance of picks or prospects, I've seen more people questioning Lombardi's handling of everything OTHER than picks and prospects (contracts, UFAs, negotiating, etc.).
Handzus
Coming off a major knee injury and has to have 1 or 2 years or whatever anyone else thinks is justified until he is back to form, and so the kings sign him to a 4year 4million each contract. hmm....
Maybe the kings should stop gambling on injured players, it hasn't worked out to well for us; or we should has this as our slogan for next year "Kings we always sign the guy that has an excuse to suck ass."
Regardless i will have my fingers crossed about handzus cause no matter how much i think he sucks we cant get rid of his contract and will have him for the full duration.
Nagy on the other hand is a funny situation. I honestly think he isnt that terrible, he isnt the dynamic scorer we would hope for but i think if we signed him for what we signed calder for he wouldnt be too terrible.
And speaking of calder you have to lump him into this group too, he hasnt done anything good at all and he is making what 2.5 for playing on the 4th line? I dont want to hear how he has grit and blah blah blah, Kostopulos was better then and now. Its funny that alot of people, myself included could bash Kostopulos a bit but he is better then every signing we made this year. I think the kings are just cursed.
You can also look at this from the other side. why could we have gotten some other talent at 4MM or 3.5MM year? it may be because no one wanted to come here to play. I mean, with a crappy goaltending situation, huge holes in the defense and a very young group of forwards and coming off of last place, who would want to be here?
And adding that Dean didn't want to sign drury all the way though him being 37 or 38, well, we get what we put out as risk.
Additionally, say if the veterans did fairly well, and we ended up losing in the first round of the playoffs? what then? we'd have an aging team that has no defense and we'd still have problems.
Handzus is in his 1st stint since ACL surgery, which takes a year to recoop fully from. I'm in my 3rd week of recovery from ACL reconstruction and it's a real bitch to say the least. Add the mental aspect of not being 100% and you have a year like Handzus. I was one of his critics till the same thing happened to me, now I understand and am willing to give him more time.
I don't know if you ever get 100% confidence back. I had an acl knee reconstruction about 5 years ago and it doesn't feel the same. Aside from the memory of it going there's the loss of feeling where nerves get damaged in the op. There's also other damage to the cartilage that loosens the whole knee joint. Like I say, 5 years later I can run on it but I don't like pivoting on it.

As compared to an aging team with no defense that's dead last in the league? Only on a Kings board will you get the argument that it's a GOOD thing the veterans played like crap.
