(and don't give me any **** about line combos... I'm making a point)
Nagy/Kopitar/Brown
Cammalleri/O'Sullivan/Frolov
Calder/Handzus/Thornton
You people want Lombardi to trade
Thornton/Willsie/Blake/Nagy and possibly Handzus, Preissing, Calder and maybe even Cammalleri or Armstrong?
AAAAND some of you want the Monarchs to make the playoffs?!
How is that supposed to work? If you trade those 4 guys that are UFAs at the end of the season then you're calling up Purcell, Moulson, Boyle and who knows!!! Tukonen? Gauthier? Piskula?
Who the hell is supposed to play for the Monarchs?
and before you give me some cock and bull story about picking up minor leaguers from other teams... WHAT TEAM is going to trade a prospect from their AHL team that can play a regular shift for a player like the Kings were offering?
If anything Lombardi did TOO MUCH this trade deadline. The Kings have depth in the farm system, picks coming out their ears and are possibly picking up ANOTHER ECHL affiliate in the off season.
I know it's appealing (especially to the draft/prospect geeks) to say "TOSS EVERYBODY... MORE PICKS!!!!" but...
IT DOES NOT WORK THAT WAY!
There's still 20 games left to play and the Kings have to ice a team! Making those trades for picks would completely screw the Monarchs out of a playoff spot. At least this way the kids in Manchester can fight for a playoff spot together. With the team they've had all season.
