About This Page: This is a discussion on LA Kings Talk within the LetsGoKings.com forums, at Los Angeles Kings Hockey Fan Forum. I know last year we got Piskula as an undrafted free agent rookie and Purcell over the summer in the same fashion. How exactly do these guys not get drafted?

Purcell seems pretty good to have never been drafted. Is it a situation where they entered the draft at a young age, went undrafted, and can now choose to play where they want for the highest bidder?
some guys never enter the draft, some guys enter the draft never to be drafted, some guys get drafted and never sign with the team(s) that draft them making them ufa's.
It happens a lot more than you would think. Steve Thomas, Rafalski, Adam Oats, Ty Conklin and a lot others were never drafted.
Steve Reinpcrieht was one that the Kings had.
Of course the best undrafted NHLer ever....
Wayne Gretzky
This, in my opinion, is where Lombardi is excelling. He is establishing a much better scouting system and leaving no stone unturned to bring in talent. He is not opposed to put a flier out on a kid as a gamble.
Dustin Penner turned out to be a huge signing for the Ducks. Hopefully the Kings will get a break with Purcel, Piskula or a player like them.

I think a lot of these guys are either too small or their games are not developed at a young age. They go to college and grow into great players. 3-4 years of college hockey can do wonders for many of these 'late bloomers'.

Thanks in advance.
For Purcell, in particular, I remember Jim Fox saying that he was a Late Bloomer.
I also find it strange that guys like Penner and Oates don't get drafted. You figure someone had to see their potential at some point early on in their careers.
Another thing I heard from a guy who played pro is that a lot of it has to do w/ politics, i.e. who you know, your relationships, when it comes to playing in the league, not just talent.
