Ducks @ Kings Game Notes
Okay, so it’s the preseason and the games don’t count…But it is still the Ducks and Kings, Southern California rivals separated by 33 miles of freeway.
It is a rivalry so fierce that it recently warranted a name, the Freeway Faceoff.
The young Kings will face the Anaheim Ducks tonight at 7:30 p.m. at STAPLES Center. (Tickets)
And don’t forget to check out the rivalry when it matters most during the season, as the Kings and Ducks square off again in the Freeway Faceoff Series... (Freeway Faceoff Pack)
The Kings have had a strong preseason, posting a 3-0-1 mark with games in Kansas City (2-1 W vs. STL), Los Angeles (6-4 W vs. PHX), Colorado (4-3 SO W vs. COL) and Las Vegas (4-3 SO L vs. COL), allowing the team to bond a bit during the travel.
Kings fans have gotten to see a glimpse of the future with prospects such as Wayne Simmonds, Alec Martinez, Oscar Moller and Thomas Hickey all logging significant minutes this preseason.
But have also gotten a look at the immediate future, with the strong play of defenseman Drew Doughty, who is scoreless but sports a plus-1 plus/minus ratin, Brian Boyle and Ted Purcell, both of whom were projected to make the team entering camp. Anze Kopitar has looked great, scoring 2-2=4 in his three games, and the power play has been especially potent with seven of the Kings 14 goals scored with the man advantage.
The Kings have also played much more physical, already accumulating 119 PIMs in four games paced by Simmonds (30 PIM), Kevin Westgarth (15), Rich Clune (12), Boyle (8) and Raitis Ivanans (7). That number could grow tonight, with four of the five Kings PIM players expected to play tonight as well as the Ducks enforcers, Travis Moen, Brad May, Kent Huskins and George Parros in the lineup.
Interestingly, both Parros and Westgarth are Princeton graduates.
Jason LaBarbera (0-0-0, 4.50 GAA) is expected to start tonight, with Erik Ersberg (0-0-1, 2.77 GAA) expected to see some action.
Also expected to play are Matt Greene, Viatcheslav Voynov, Denis Gauthier, Drew Doughty, Davis Drewiske and Peter Harrold on the blueline. With Boyle, Westgarth, Moller, Simmonds and Kopitar joined by Purcell, Andrei Loktionov, David Meckler, Dustin Brown, Jarret Stoll, Matt Moulson and Kyle Calder
The Ducks, who are coming off a 5-4 shootout loss two nights ago at Honda Center to leave Anaheim at 2-1-1 for the preseason.
Teemu Selanne scored two goals in that 5-4 loss, his first game since signing a two-year deal on Sunday. He did not make the trip to LA.
Thanks to Anaheimducks.com, here is the Ducks projected lineup for tonight’s tussle. Jonas Hiller, Todd Marchant, Josh Green, Ken Klee, Francois Beauchemin, Rob Niedermayer, Steve Montador, Brad May, Brennan Evans, Corey Perry, Samuel Pahlsson, Andrew Ebbett, Chris Kunitz, Scott Niedermayer, Troy Bodie, Ryan Getzlaf, David LeNeveu, Brett Festerling, George Parros, Travis Moen, Bobby Ryan, Brian Sutherby, Joakim Lindstrom, Sean O’Donnell and Kent Huskins.
