It would be great to get Gleason back. I can't see why anyone would object to this - he's young, strong in his own zone and has the type of character DL looks for...
Gleason obviously has a lot more upside and is still young. And for all those reasons acquiring him will cost much more money and or picks (I don't know his contract situation).
Matti on the other hand, will be a UFA and can be bought cheap. Obviously both players represent two different goals. Gleason being an impact D-man to stay with the team for a while, and Norstrom to be a stop-gap D-man and great locker room presence.
Anybody that thinks Matty will improve ... is living in the last century. The problem isn't so much lack of footspeed but bad (and painfully slow) stick work. ...Love Matty but no thanks.
OK, who's the wiseguy that posted this on Matty's locker?
therein lies the crux of the entire argument. We need at least two guys. Stuart and Nordstrom? seems realistic. much more than signing orpik, and signing jason smith is the same as signing matty, essentially, maybe even worse.
I say We need 3 out of these four: Commador,ORPIK,Smith,Nordstrom. All of which should be as short term as possible with atleast one of which signing a one year contract WITHOUT a no trade cluase in order to fetch us a pick and or prospects at next years deadline to continue feeding the pipeline...meanwhile Hickey Stays in Manchester and so does Doughosain and so does Bernier for that matter (why chance ****ing up their developement) ...
the remaining defence under contract (that matter) for next season are all small to smallish puck movers: Visnovsky,JMFJ,Priessing
Now place whoever out of the above four next to each of them.
Simple!
Will we have to over-pay for all of them. Yes!! but so what!! Ownership has one of the highest bankrolls in the league with the cap max greenlighted. Plus cap max will go up 3.5 millionish by next season and will increase again the following year. That and not signing and trading away Cammy's potential cap hit should free up enough cap room to lock up all of our young stars. Really next year I think we are only 34 million cap committed anyways; how much money do we need to leave open for oully's pay raise? really?
Isn't one old and slow guy back on the blueline enough, unless Blake still wants his $6m per it's pretty inevitable he will be resigned, and if he continues to play with JMFJ get more minutes than he should
We are going to have to try and overpay for a UFA such as Orpik
Either trade for NHL or NHL ready D prospect, or hope to hell our draft pick(s) can step in

i say we need neither of the (middle) two, and you can't have either Commodore or Norstrom until you can spell it.
