For those that tuned into Kings Talk last night, Nick Nickson made a comment in response to the last caller's question in which he said,
Quote:
"Right now, with the position they're in, I think (The Kings) have to stay the course, keep the picks. But, next year's gotta be a turnaround year. Next year's gotta be a better year. Otherwise, I really think you have to re-assess what you're doing..."
One can argue what exactly he meant and who he was referring to when he said "you have to" but those are very frank comments made by a usually positive and optimistic Nick Nickson.
It's good to hear a show nowadays that's pretty frank and truthful in comparison with previous years where we'd hear the same "blue" answers to the same questions. (If you need an example look no further than last year's, "Cloutier's played....okay... for the past.....3 or 4 games.") It's nice to know we're not the only ones frustrated at the current state of the franchise.
Now, yes...I agree that The Kings should be better next year. Playoff, better? Or should The Kings take a run at John Tavares? Might as well, if we're not going to be in contention, right?
Also, If you listen to Kings Talk, listen out for Matt's (CBGB) call and listen to him cry about Blake. (JK, Matt)
But it was humorous to hear Nick and Daryl's lame efforts at trying to defend Blake's quotes.
dude stop trying to stir the pot man. You people are reading tooo much in between the lines. Obviously it has to be a turnaround year. It's common sense to say that there has to be more improvement next season. It's nothing new.
There should have been some improvement this season. We're well on our way to finishing markedly worse than last year. To say it needs to get better next year is an understatement.
It's really tough to put a timeline on something like this. This is the first year that Dean Lombardi has had his staff in place and that includes for the draft!
He ESTIMATED 3-5 years and that is based on prior experience in pre-CBA days, it's different now. Much as I appreciate all our Kings commentators and love their work, 35+ years of being a Los Angeles Kings fan has taught me not to take certain commentaries to heart until you see it/hear it from Kings Management.
Exactly what I was saying for quite a long tie here: This season is tanked, no trade for an "elite" goalie, no trade for veterans, no trade for expensive proven players etc. unless a REALLY REALLY good offer comes around...
After this season, revisit defensive department, make a few changes (I have defensive d-men in my mind, yes...), and go for it the 3rd season. The 3rd season is the season that we will evaluate DL, but especially MC's work...whether he's capable of leading this team to greater things or was he just a "fill.in" to develop our youngsters...
That's all I was trying to say. Last year, he was quoted as saying "I think we all expect this team to be competing for a playoff spot somewhere in the 6-8 seed and I think it'll be a dissapointment if they're not."
Well, suffice to say those expectations were thwarted many weeks ago.
But this is the first time I have EVER heard Nick make a suggestion of that kind.
I don't think he is calling out Dean Lombardi at all. He is simply saying that Dean's plan of action better start kicking in next season or it needs to be looked at.....again.
This is a classic example of breaking down every piece of this organization and starting over. Bruce Harmon did that with Tiger's golf swing and he sucked for significant amount of time (well sucked is a relatie term). When Tiger finally mastered the plan, he startd winning again and hasn't looked back.
That is the best analogy I could come up with, but tI think Nick os on te right track with his comments.

If you listen to KT on a more frequent basis, I absolutely think Nick is frustrated with the current situation and feels a change is needed. About a month ago a caller brought up the whole 'fire Crawford' thing. Nick said subtly that a coach is hired to win games and if a team is not winning than he is not doing his job. He also references that 'something big needs to happen' to get this team to change. Take that how you will but I personally feel Nick doesn't believe the team is headed in the right direction. I can't blame him either. We have definitely seen some good INDIVIDUAL development this year but the team as a whole still blows. A lot would have to happen overnight to makes this team significantly better next season and from the looks of it, that's not going to happen.
EDIT: I forgot to mention KNX1070 mentioned, while reporting on the firing of the Leafs coach, asked how much more it would take to get Crawford out...oh well.
