When was the last time we had a moment of silence for another officer who died in the line of duty? Last fireman who died? Should every sporting team in the city have a moment of silence every time a police officer or firefighter dies in the line of duty? How about soldiers in Iraq who are from the LA area? Don't they deserve recognition? What about the people in Illinois - do we not care, because they're "not from around here?"
Not trying to start anything but they did have the CSFA (CA State Firefighter Association) benefit game where all the players wore the CSFA patches and their jerseys were auctioned off afterwards. Also every game this season they have chosen someone from a local military base to stand before the crowd in honor of all the overseas military personel.

Again I'm not saying we need to honor every officer killed in the lne of duty but just this once would have been a nice gesture.

Doesn't kinda seem like the other weren't as impotant as him
While watching the news coverage of the interviews of those watching the funeral procession I noticed that several people went out of their way to bash the LAPD while praising the officer, whom they did not know personally. Not trying to stir the pot but it sort of made me mad that some people would extoll an officer (who by all accounts deserves the accolades) yet have the knee-jerk instinct to bash the organization that he represents. Just seems like those few individuals are hypocrites.

And I would have appreciated the Kings having a moment of silence had I attended the game.

Yes, but why "just this once would have been a nice gesture?" Because you think so? Do you not see the egocentricity there?

And just to be clear, I understood the firefighter thing because it was raising money for them, but honestly I could do without the "military person X is standing at center ice for the anthems" (and hell, I could do without the anthems too).

The problem is, how would families of other slain officers feel if only this officer gets all the recognition? I don't have a problem with say, a once a year charity game commemorating all the officers and firefighters who may have been killed in the line of duty with proceeds going to the families.

I do have a problem with one officer being singled out. Is the suffering of the other officers' families less worthy than the suffering of officer Simmons's family?

And sign me up for the "no anthem" club? What the hell does an anthem have to do with a ball game? I'm not aware of any other country that does this. Hell, the Soviet Union didn't do it.

Although I should not assume so, I think it would be safe to to say that all my fellow law enforcement brothers and sisters along with their families would have liked to have seen that gesture. So when I made the above statement I'm was not speaking only for myself but for police officers as a whole.

We can go and on about this but in the end we are not going to change our opinons in this matter no matter what is said.

I do have a problem with one officer being singled out. Is the suffering of the other officers' families less worthy than the suffering of officer Simmons's family?
No, the suffering of the other officer' s families is no less significant than that of Ofcr. Simmon's family. Just the same as they were no less heroic than Ofcr. Simmons was. But we do single out specific people for their acts of heroism. We award the Congressional Medal of Honor for acts of extrordinary bravery to our military. I would assume that the families of other fallen soldiers not awarded the CMH do not have a problem with that. In the police ranks they award the Medal of Valor for extrordinary acts of heroism. Again I would assume that the families of other fallen officers do not have a problem as well.

According to what I have heard, Ofcr. Simmons jumped in front of Ofcr. Veenstra after he had been shot to protect him from further gunfire and in so doing lost his life. That selfless act coupled with all of his outside activities with the church and children, in my mind makes him a very special person worthy of the memorial service that he recieved.

I guess if they had announced a moment of silence for Ofcr. Simmons and all of the other fallen officers that would have been most appropriate.

Again, we can go and on about this but in the end we are not going to change our opinons in this matter no matter what is said.

I can appreciate that you are personally affected by this and that it is important to you, I just don't agree that it is anything to be offended or upset at the Kings about for their (lack of) action in this case. I mean, should there have been a moment of silence for Heath Ledger? A lot of people were touched by his ability as an actor and upset at his death. Where do you draw the line?

In the end you are right, we are going to have to agree to disagree, which is fine...
