Looking at who may be available at the trading deadline, it looks to me that Blake should bring back a lot of talent, because there will be a great demand for him. If Toronto stays anywhere close to that 8th place spot in the east, they won't trade Sundin and if Atlanta wants to resign Hossa, those are the only guys that may be available that could truly make a huge difference on a playoff team. Plus Blake being a defenceman makes him even more valuable. I think that whichever of Detriot or Anaheim gets Blake probably becomes the favorite to win the Cup. Hopefully there is a bit of a bidding war between the two with possibly the Rangers getting involved also. The Rangers may think that adding Blake could win them the east, since the east is so wide open.
Now if I am DL, it would take a heck of a lot to get Blake from me and help the Ducks win back to back Cups, making the Kings look terrible again in the local markets and with the fans, including all the bad press that goes along with it. It would be something like Bobby Ryan, the Edm 1st pick and maybe more to get Blake. Adding Blake to a defense of Neidermeyer, Pronger, Schneider, Beauchemin and O‘Donnell might make them unstopable. Plus it keeps Blake from going to the Wings and this will probably be Neidermeyers last year, so they have to take advantage of it while they can.
As far as the Wings go, they don't want the Ducks getting Blake and do they really want Lilja on the ice getting many playoff minutes so he can turn the puck over to Selanne again. Also, the Wings only have one Hall of Fame defenseman while the Ducks have two. The Red Wings really need Blake come playoff time. I would ask for Jimmy Howard, Jakub Kindl and a 1st.
Although the Rangers is where I think he may end up, going with Nagy for Staal, Sanguinetti and a 1st.
Don't be suprised if the Ducks and Wings get into a bidding war over him. Look how close it was between them last year, one player would have made a difference. anyway thats how I see it right now.
The returns you are speculating would be for a 33 year old Blake, not a 38 year old Blake.
No way could Blake fetch Bobby Ryan and Edmontons 1st. Maybe if the Kings added the Dallas #1...
I don't think the Rangers would deal Staal, straight up for Blake. And the Wings wouldn't give up Howrd, Kindl and a #1 for him.
Glen Sather is dumb, but not quite that dumb. Staal is a keeper, and I doubt they're dangling Sanguinetti since Rozsival/Mara/Malik are all UFAs after this season. Of course, Sather could just as easily open up the checkbook again but it seems like as an organization the Rangers are trying to make a more concerted effort to develop some internal talent.
You take away Staal, and all you have guarenteed for next season is Fedor Tyutin and Daniel Girardi. Somebody like (hello, my name is) Al Montoya is a more likely trade chip.
At this rate, I think you'll see a package of cheap/young NHL player, good but not A-level prospect, and a 2008 or 2009 first rounder.
If sending Blake to Anaheim meant they win another cup this year, I wont do it, for ANYTHING. Yes, thats right. I dont care if the Ducks offered us 4 1st round picks for Blake. If I felt *HE* would make the difference to winning the cup, my answer is NO.
I guess it all depends on the demand, although I believe that if the Ducks or Wings get Blake it probably will put them over the top. The Rangers were looking to win this year when they signed Gomez and Drury to those big contracts during the off season. With Lundquist going to be getting a huge raise next year and the defensive corps hitting UFA after the season, I think NY will be looking to win now rather than later.
Look at what Detroit gave up for Bertuzzi last year, Shawn Matthias and a second-round pick and that was with Bertuzzi missing the whole year and been playing poorly since the Moore incident. Plus the trades I mentioned were less than Nashville gave up for an injured Forsberg last year. Yeah, Blake isn't 33 anymore, but put him in front of an All Star goalie, like Giguere, Hasek or Lundquist, play him with more confident and consistent players around him and he could make a huge difference.
I could be totally wrong but I think the Kings will get more than people think for Blake.

Nashville had/has an insane amount of depth where they could afford to give up Upshall and Parent for Forsberg without making a dent into their minor league system. There's not a lot of teams that have that same depth and the motivation to grab a rental. At the time, Nashville was neck and neck with Detroit for the top seed and were hoping Forsberg would be the difference between an easier road as the #1 seed versus three rounds of hell as a #4 seed.
And a 2007 draft pick is not equivalent to a 2008 draft pick. The draft is supposedly above average this year whereas last year was considered subpar. Ie, compare the 2003 first round to 2002 in terms of depth.
Teams will overpay for rentals, but they will do so by giving up draft picks before prospects, prospects before NHL players. So getting somebody like Staal is a bit unlikely.
