About This Page: This is a discussion on LA Kings Talk within the LetsGoKings.com forums, at Los Angeles Kings Hockey Fan Forum. Sounds like DL material to me. Heres some more reads on the guy:
ALEX PIETRANGELO | ALEX PIETRANGELO Scouting Report | ALEX PIETRANGELO NHL Draft 2008
He has stepped up
He has stepped up his physical game a bit but it's his smarts and poise that we love so much. It almost seems like he's not trying at times because he makes it all look so easy. Alex is so smart with and without the puck. He is one of those players that seems to slow the game down, his vision on the ice is outstanding. He makes great reads on when to hold the blueline and has a knack for keeping the puck in.
He makes great reads on the powerplay and like all great players, he makes players around him better. Petro's top end potential ceiling is very high, we expect him to be a top end NHL'er for many years.
Through all hype Alex just keeps everything under control and puts the team first. He is the most mature 17 year old I have ever met, I swear he's 27.
The standout defenseman from the Ontario Hockey League’s Niagara IceDogs is one of the gems in a deep 2008 NHL Entry Draft class and is touted as a franchise-type player for whichever National Hockey League team snaps him up in June.
He is 6-foot-4 and 210 pounds, has great mobility, plays a solid game at both ends of the ice and displays a nasty streak that keeps opposing forwards honest.
“This kid eventually one day will be like Chris Pronger,” IceDogs coach Mario Cicchillo told The Score in November. “Guys say he is not as tough as Chris Pronger, but he is still a young man and when he becomes 21, look at the potential in the kid.”
One of the first things that comes up when you talk to a scout about Pietrangelo is his competitiveness. He loves to win and takes his team’s success – and failures – personally.
A western conference NHL scout who follows the OHL was asked last week whether Pietrangelo was considered a top-five prospect.
"Oh **** yeah!" he said. "Top five. Maybe top three, maybe top one. This guy's really got everything going for him. He has a low panic threshold, he's pretty poised out there even when it gets hectic. He's a good defender and good offensively. Plus he has a physical edge. When you put it all together, he's quite a prospect."
"I think he's already a good character guy, this kid's a good leader," says Cicchillo. "For a second-year player...the rookies looked to him for leadership right from the start of camp and he took them under his wing. Even the veterans, who are pretty sharp, some are already looking up to him. Plus he's not cocky. He doesn't goof around in practices. His attitude is 'when it's practice, I'm here to work.' "
Leadership qualities:
He is one of the teams assistant captain and was captain of the U18 team.
If we don't get the #1 pick, I say Pietrangelo over Doughty.
Doughty might put up bigger numbers, but Alex has a better overall game, and more upside.
As for taking Pietrangelo over Stamkos with the #1 pick? I'd hate to have to make that decision. Do you take Stamkso, who is not compared to the best in the league (though darn close), or do you take Pietrangelo who is. Names like Lidstrom, Pronger. It is a tuff one for sure.
I don't know enough to make a definitive call, and I will be happy with any of the top 3 players.

Sounds like some of the reasons why Lidstrom is so effective doesn't it.

I think the references are more on his defensive play. Great positioning, reads the play really well and is very effective with his reach.
Lidstrom is more than just an offensive defensmen, he is leading the league with a plus 39.
I understand that, but Lidstrom's awareness with the puck is what people are referring to a lot of the time in regards to Doughty. but the positional sense and overall hockey awareness is on that level.
DL said if the draft pictures gets "blurry", Stamkos isn't the one you will then automatically pick.
We keep seeing reports like this, and it's clear that DL might indeed take someone OTHER then MR. Stamkos in the draft if we end up with the top pick.
DL would love to play poker with you. He is just pretending to hem and haw in order to not declare anything before the draft. Every GM likes to say they want person A but they really want person B. I don't know why. I think the last time a GM said before the draft that they were going to pick a person for sure was Crosby in 05. Other than that assume they are not being as truthful as we would like.
