The point is not that the Kings do or do not make the playoffs. The point is that they extend their season. Do you really think a team that gives it all up in January is bound for the playoffs next year? In that sense giving up next year in February would be deemed progress. That sucks. This terrible season can be reclaimed with the show of a little bit of fight before it's mathematically over. Once it's mathematically over all effort after that is just pointless spoiler hockey which I couldn't care to watch. The purpose of this thread is to point out to the board that we've got a very few number of games left with any meaning at all. As a fan, this Detroit game represents the very last bit of hope for more competitive hockey from the Kings this year. I plan on watching my Kings give Detroit a run for their money.

Strong D has a lot to do with all those high point teams. Bad D has a lot to do with the low point Kings. Just sit back and enjoy watching the youth progress and give up any idea of playoffs for them this year.
If the Kings manage a victory over the Wings, they've got a shot to continue their season. If the Kings can beat the Wings than we've got Anaheim at home and then head out to the East Coast with some momentum. And for the record, those teams out east are terrible. The Islanders are awful, we killed 'em last year, same with the Rags and Philly's not any good either. Win all 5 and the Kings are back in the race.
That's a 5 game season and it all starts Tuesday. Personally, I like this team. They're fun to watch, they're a hell of a lot better than some of the teams we've had that made the playoffs so I'm knocking off work and heading to Staples Tuesday. It's important to remember that despite the start there's still a lot of hockey left. This team has the talent to better than Detroit for one night and be better than most teams on most nights.
Let's go Kings.

A) I'd respond to your first thought, but the fact is, there's no real telling what this team's gonna look like in 5 weeks. And there's no changing that. With the team out of realistic contention and with all the short veteran contracts, we're trade deadline sellers. That means in five weeks, this season's gonna be over anyway. If not sooner.
B) I'd be perfectly happy to see the Kings give any and every team from here on out a run for their money. But I'd be even happier at this point if they happen to fall short most of the time. Or more accurately, just enough of the time. But either way, I'll be there hoping and cheering for the best.
Mathematics isn't plural in your above statement. It's singular. In first grade we learn to match the verb and the noun.

I didn't mean to start this thread with the idea that I truly think the Kings are going to make the playoffs. The point is that for the Kings and Kings fans, the PLAYOFFS ARE RIGHT NOW. The Kings stunk up the first half of the season but they aren't ****, they're really a pretty good team (IMO). These last 2 home games are probably all we get this year, all this team gets this year. One's against the Red Wings (who I hate) and the other is against the Ducks (who I really hate). All of us have two more games to watch this team be competitive before Kings hockey phones in the rest of the season. That's it. I plan on getting up for it. Me, the Russians, we're going to get hammered and yell like it's the playoffs on Tuesday because realisitically we're not going to see playoff hockey this year. This thread is my attempt to get a few people motivated to go out and see a good Kings team try to win before there's not any reason to try.

i'll give you points for your optimism, but the quote above is where you lost me.
also... we did beat the NYR and NYI last season, but lost to the then basement dwellers PHI. incredibly inconsistent play last year vs. the east, not to mention those three teams were a whole 'nother story. All three have improved since then, imo, whereas our team remains largely inconsistent due mainly to our poor defense (and secondarily to the team "not showing up" every 7 games or so).
philly has gotten a lot tougher, i don't see us beating them since we're a "soft" team. the rangers? will avery get under our skin or will we be able to avoid the pest? the isles? we might be able to eek out a win there, MAYBE.
i'll be at that detroit game also. obviously hoping the team plays well and maybe gets a win. but i won't go in with unrealistic expectations. we are playing the #1 team in the west. a team we haven't been able to beat yet this season.
i don't believe the kings are tanking the season for the #1 pick on purpose, but i'm also not going to expect them to turn into contenders (or even a good team!) overnight. furthermore, i don't believe in the notion that the games we have left (win or lose) will lack any meaning. we've got a bright future ahead of us. watch kopitar, brown, o'sullivan, johnson, purcell, etc. and enjoy. it's as simple as that.
