A friend of mine who follows collegiate hockey rather closely speaks very highly of both Zatkoff and Martinez. He's a fan of a rival team, so he was happy to see those two leaving the college ranks.
Heres what he said when I asked him about Alec Martinez

Yes I know of Martinez, and tell your guys we are very grateful they relieved us of this problem. Probably one of the two or three best d-men in the league last year. Big, fast and good hockey sense. Definitely a thorn in ####s side. He had as many goals as all but three players on the #### team and he plays defense.
Plays a challenging, in your face style rather than a positional style. Really good player.
Between he and Zatkoff the Kings got a couple of good ones.
