You know, I'm well aware I'm going to be neg-repped for this, but I've never seen a more overrated player my whole life, in ANY sport, than Adam Deadmarsh is by many Kings' fans.
Dustin Brown is equal to Deadmarsh RIGHT NOW.
Brown's at 24 goals in 47 games. Deadmarsh's career high in goals was 33. If Brown stays healthy, he'll better that, and Brown's just getting started.
Neither guy is a terrific passer, their points are pretty much equally divided between goals and assists.
Brown's -3 is one of the best marks on this team. Deadmarsh stayed on the plus side of the ledger for most of his career, but never had a season where his +/- was at or near the best on his team.
Yes, Deadmarsh would drop the gloves, but he was strictly a middleweight fighter, and any time he ventured beyond that, he usually met with disastrous results. If fighting isn't Brown's bag, that's fine with me. Leave fighting to the fighters. Better to see a guy like Brown stay within his limitations instead of getting needlessly injured trying to be someone he's not.
And as for comparing Deadmarsh to a guy like Neely, that's a joke. Deadmarsh never played in an All-Star game, Neely played in four. Neely scored over 40 goals four times, and over 50 goals three times. Deadmarsh never hit 40 goals once, much less 50. Neely, in my view, was a tougher customer than Deadmarsh to boot, as Neely would take on heavyweights and more often than not hold his own.
Yes, Deadmarsh won a Stanley Cup. He won it playing alongside Roy, Forsberg, Sakic, Kamensky, Foote, Claude Lemieux, in other words, guys who were better players than he was, in most cases FAR better players than he was. Without playing on a team with the talent of the Avalanche, or playing on a line with Allison and Palffy in L.A., who would Adam compare to? Probably guys like Steve Konowalchuk or Ron Sutter. Don't get me wrong -- those guys are solid players. Just like Deadmarsh -- solid, not great.
As for players in Kings' history who had far more of an impact than Deadmarsh, I can think of two right off the bat -- Tony Granato and Tomas Sandstrom. You're gonna tell me that Deadmarsh was better skilled or tougher than those two guys? Or John Tonelli, who was here in L.A. longer than Deadmarsh was? And that doesn't even count a guy like Butch Goring, who left L.A. before I became a Kings' fan. If you're going to talk about honoring great players or retiring jerseys, there's quite a few guys in Kings' history who should stand in line ahead of Deadmarsh.
Again, before some of you fly off the handle, I'm saying that Deadmarsh was a solid and tough player. I enjoyed watching him here. And it's tragic that his career was cut short due to injury, but Adam played the game as though he was determined to break his body down, very much like Wendel Clark did. That, to me, is a sad waste of talent. I understand that there are players who are kamikazes, I've seen many of them. But the ones who lasted were the ones who recognized their limit line, and understood the maximum their bodies could handle. Hopefully, Brown is one of the latter, otherwise he'll become a bull in the body of a china shop. It would be another in a long list of Kings' tragedies if that were to happen.
You know, I'm well aware I'm going to be neg-repped for this, but I've never seen a more overrated player my whole life, in ANY sport, than Adam Deadmarsh is by many Kings' fans.
Apparently you can't comprehend the difference between an unquestionably great player and a fan favorite. That is what Deadmarsh has always been...a fan favorite. As far as I can tell nobody is calling for his hall of fame induction.
Wait a second!! where are all the People who said Dustin Brown sucks, is a liiability, and needs to be traded that we kept reading only a few short years ago. I guess they decided to STFU!! Nice work guys....

Hey, you're the guy who called him the "perfect hockey player", did you not?

I hereby call for Adam Deadmarsh's induction into the hall of fame.
