What the heck are the kings going to do witrh them all seriously? Is it 14 picks we now own next year? Are we expanding another AHL team? We needed to trade some picks today but instead we got more. I understand that Dean problaby wasn't getting chit for offers, but I sure hope that something now happens on draft day. Perhaps our 3 second rounders for a 5-10 pick?
usually the exchange rate for pick value equivalence is +1 year -1 round. so a 4th this year can be dumped for a 3rd next year or, as we did last year with washington, mailed forward in exchange for a 7th (2007 4th to washington in exchange for a 2007 7th and a 2008 4th).
conceivably you could dish an extra 3rd this year for a 2nd in '09 or even a 1st in '10
so...you just need to find that GM that has someone he REALLY wants available and we REALLY don't need or want and say, ok, you can have this 2nd round pick of ours and get your guy, but it'll cost you a 1st a year from now. GM's get bigger boners leading up to draft day than they do the trade deadline, so if your guy has fallen further than you think, and you have a chance to get him, you take it.
all that said...DL will spread the extras out and turn them into higher round picks in later years, because those are the bargaining chips that will enable deadline deals when we're a playoff team. it is entirely within reason to expect that we should have 2 1st-round picks in the next 3-4 drafts solely based on the pile we've amassed already. that adds up to both draft day and deadline day flexibility. w00t.
Dl has said from the beginning of his time in LA that his goal is to prepare for the 08 draft by acquiring picks. He felt that the 07 draft was not strong but the 08 draft is what he has been waiting for.
It is a very nice problem in a nice draft. The Kings should be guaranteed the #1 pick now. And if they get it without trading picks, the possibilities are endless.
Don't get me wrong, I love the picks, I am just wondering where everyone is going to play next year if we don't consolidate some of the picks. Maybe we move some prospects and picks for better picks who knows, it;s just a boatload of people we have to sign if we use them all.
Dean talked about getting NHL development to the level of Major League Baseball development.
I think that actually making use of an ECHL team is a brilliant idea (by starting valued assets at that level and not ancient goons). MLB teams have their prospects play as many 4 different levels of competition before even thinking about putting them on the big league roster.
With an ECHL team in Ontario, I think that even a brief audition at that level gets the player familiar with the area and gives the Kings staff a chance to look at a player before sending them across the country where it's harder to keep an eye on them. Even half a season for a drafted players gives them some idea of what they're getting into as far as the city, and the team etc.
An instructional season in Ontario then a season against some better competition in Manchester and hopefuly back to LA.
I posted this in another thread, but what happened to the sticky post listing all of the Kings' future picks? I'd like to see an updated version of that list after today.
